This Thanksgiving, our Occupational Therapy team is sharing 10 sensory-friendly strategies to help families support children with sensory needs during the holiday. These tips are designed to help kids navigate events that are out of their normal routine, especially those with large crowds or high levels of activity. We hope these suggestions help families create positive, memorable experiences while meeting each child’s sensory needs.

Yesterday, the students in Ms. Kindig’s class built an alphabet train. Have you ever built an alphabet train? It takes a lot of focus and effort! While it was challenging, Ms. Kindig’s students worked together and got the job done.

They used the alphabet displayed above the whiteboard to help figure out which letters came next. When the train was complete, the children felt proud and accomplished, showing just how smart and capable they are!

¿Alguna vez has construido uno?

Ms. Cindy and Ms. Dana's class enjoyed water play and all the benefits!
Water play is more than just splashing around, it’s a powerful learning experience for toddlers. Here’s why it’s so important:

1. Supports Physical Development
**Fine motor skills: Scooping, pouring, squeezing sponges, and manipulating small water toys strengthen hand muscles and coordination.

**Gross motor skills: Moving around water tables or outdoor water areas helps balance, core strength, and overall motor control.

2. Encourages Sensory Exploration
**Water provides a calming sensory experience, helping toddlers understand temperature, texture, depth, and movement.

**Sensory play also supports self-regulation, reducing stress and promoting focus.

3. Builds Cognitive Skills
**Toddlers experiment naturally: “What happens if I pour this here?”

**Water play introduces early science concepts such as cause and effect, volume, floating and sinking, and changing states (ice vs. liquid).

**Helps lay foundations for problem-solving and critical thinking.

4. Strengthens Social and Language Development
**When playing alongside other children, toddlers practice sharing, taking turns, and cooperative play.

**Water play invites lots of conversation: describing actions (“I’m pouring!”), noticing changes (“It’s full!”), and asking questions.

5. Encourages Creativity and Imagination
**Toddlers love to pretend—washing toy animals, cooking “soup,” making waterfalls.

**Open-ended materials (cups, spoons, funnels) promote creative thinking.

6. Promotes Emotional Well-being
**Water is naturally soothing; it can help children relax, calm down, and express emotions through repetitive, rhythmic actions.

**It gives children a safe way to explore independence and build confidence.

7. Accessible and Inclusive
**Water play is adaptable for children of all abilities.

**It can be scaled up or down depending on space, budget, and developmental level.

Mrs. Laramie’s MWF morning students are enjoying the sensory table and participating in a variety of activities that strengthen fine motor skills. They practiced pinching, grasping, pouring, flipping through storybook pages, carrying and placing feathers in a “turkey” strainer, and working together as a team. This is how learning is amplified at PACE!

Miss Cara’s PALs class has been embracing the fall spirit while exploring sensory activities and building language skills. Our theme this season has focused on pumpkins and Thanksgiving.

Students helped carve a Jack-o’-lantern during circle time, scooped and poured corn kernels in the sensory bin, created pumpkin and turkey crafts, and participated in many other hands-on activities. Each experience provided opportunities to model language, encourage communication, and ask meaningful questions connected to their academic goals.

We love watching our students learn, grow, and enjoy the magic of fall through play and exploration.

Mrs. Glossenger’s little learners have been busy preparing for Thanksgiving next week with a fun and meaningful turkey table time activity.

Students created their own “I Am Thankful For” turkeys by gluing and pasting colorful feathers and writing on each feather what they are thankful for. Each turkey became a unique creation that reflected their ideas and creativity.

Activities like this keep their curious minds working and learning as they practice fine motor skills, early writing, imagination, and reflection. We are truly thankful for our wonderful students and the joy they bring to our classroom every day.

B1 students enjoy sensory bins and sensory time! Sensory play focuses on activities that engage your child’s senses, helping them develop language skills and fine motor skills. It also helps with cognitive growth, fosters social interactions and encourages experimentation. Your child’s language skills develop naturally through sensory play. By engaging the senses, your child will learn how to describe what they’re doing and how it feels, eventually using more descriptive words to communicate. Your sensory system can help you calm down. This is particularly important for children as they develop.

Mrs. Lisa's M/W/F morning class enjoys playtime all while working on sharing, taking turns, and patience. Play allows children to be active, calm their minds, follow their own ideas, pretend, be creative, and build physical, social, and intellectual skills. In fact, play is the main way that young children learn.

Ms. Cindy's classes have been busy with many turkey activities this week. The students created turkeys out of playdough, they made a turkey craft while putting the letters of their name in order and worked on their fine motor and color skills as they match stickers to the turkey feathers.
