Our Mission:
We celebrate the inseparable relationship between water and life, inspire creativity and lifelong learning, foster stewardship of our natural world, and grow community.

36 acres in size, half of which are water, Wellfield resides on a historical piece of property originally known as the “North Main Street Well Field.” The property has been a source of hydraulic energy and drinking wa

ter for the City of Elkhart since the mid-1800s. Wellfield Botanic Gardens has a long-term lease agreement with the City of Elkhart, which still owns and operates 13 active wells on the site, providing the majority of drinking water for the community. The Elkhart Rotary Club conceived the Gardens as a community service project in 2002 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Rotary International. The project was officially handed over to the Wellfield Botanic Gardens Board of Directors in 2005 to begin implementation of the Master Plan, which envisages 25 themed garden and event spaces, as well as a visitors center and guest amenities. Construction began in 2006 with the first earth-moving work to reshape and reconfigure the ponds. A 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, Wellfield Botanic Gardens derives all operating capital, development costs and endowment from private donations, earned revenue, memberships and grants.

🌳 The Michiana Bonsai Show is coming to Wellfield September 19th & 20th!

Spend the weekend surrounded by stunning miniature trees as we welcome three incredible bonsai artists to the gardens:
🎋 Mark Fields — noted bonsai artist and past president of the American Bonsai Society, based in Greenwood, Indiana
🎋 Bill Valavanis — renowned bonsai artist, teacher, scholar, and author, and proprietor of the International Bonsai Arboretum
🎋 Jennifer Price — Chicago-based bonsai artist trained under multiple renowned masters

The Bonsai Show is free with Wellfield admission — free for members, $10 for adult non-members, and $5 for kids ages 3–12 (2 and under are free). Not a member yet? Now's a great time to join and enjoy events like this all year long.

Join Joy Blooms at Wellfield on Saturday, August 15th at 10:15 a.m. for a hands-on floral workshop perfect for beginners and flower lovers alike!

Summer is at its peak, and the Gardens are overflowing with color, texture, and fresh-cut inspiration. In this workshop, you'll learn simple design tips and care techniques to help your arrangement look intentional, balanced, and long-lasting. Come soak up the beauty of the Gardens and leave with a bouquet that captures the warmth and abundance of late summer 💐

All materials included: vases, pruners, and a beautiful assortment of flowers. This workshop takes place in our indoor Cottage Classroom, so it's a great option rain or shine.

Sip, Stroll & Craft: The Herbal Adventure at Wellfield 🌿

🩸 Save a life and get into the Gardens for free! The South Bend Medical Foundation's Bloodmobile will be on-site in Wellfield's parking lot for our annual Blood Drive on Thursday, August 6th.

Every donation helps ensure blood is available for patients in our community who need it most, and as a thank-you, anyone who donates blood that day receives free admission to the Gardens!
