A walk with a purpose. 💧💙

Clinical-year Physician Assistant (PA) students partnered with Unto this past Wednesday for a Water Walk, carrying buckets of water two miles from a local creek to campus to better understand the daily reality faced by millions of people around the world.

The experience was meant to gain perspective and empathy on the long journeys many make to access water. The group is collecting donations to provide 30 filters that would bring clean, safe water to over 150 people across the world.

“Etown is empowering me to build a career rooted in impact, inspired by my belief in improving the world step by step. My coursework challenges me to think creatively through complex problems, and hands-on projects, like designing and building a remote-control car, have brought that learning to life. Studying abroad and interning with Catamount Solar in Vermont gave me invaluable insight into renewable energy systems and how engineering decisions affect installation in the real world. As I look toward a future in water treatment or photovoltaic design, I feel prepared and confident. And beyond the classroom, serving as president of Etown's all-male A ca****la group, Phalanx, has helped me grow as a leader, build community, and form meaningful connections that define my Etown experience.” - Gavin McQuate '27, Engineering major, Architectural Studies minor

Making complex computer science concepts easier to understand. 💻

As part of Elizabethtown College's Summer Creative Arts and Research Program (SCARP), Computer Science majors Katia Daly ’28 and Kylie Ueda ’27 are creating new study tools that support student learning.

Working alongside faculty mentor and Assistant Professor of Computer Science Jingwen (Jessica) Wang, the two Blue Jays are expanding on previous SCARP research by developing an application that uses AI to convert computer science notes into short explanation videos.

"The most interesting part of this project is knowing we'll end with a finished product that can genuinely help students succeed," Daly said. "I've also really enjoyed learning how to build a website with AI integration since these were tools I hadn't had the opportunity to use before."

Through Elizabethtown College's Summer Creative Arts and Research Program (SCARP), Music Therapy major Marina Tague ’28 is researching music education in rural, low-income school districts across northeast Pennsylvania to identify ways to create more equitable opportunities for young musicians.

Working with faculty mentor and Director of Music Therapy Emily Frantz, Tague is conducting interviews with local music educators and completing an in-depth literature review. She hopes her research will one day lay the foundation for her own nonprofit that expands access to music education throughout the region.

"Researching the social development of students after participating in music programs has been especially rewarding," Tague said. "Learning how concepts such as social competency, self-efficacy, empowerment, and peer connection contribute to student growth has strengthened my understanding of the topic and reinforced the importance of equitable access to music education."
