🎶 Meet Our Instructors: Preston Harrell 🎶

We are delighted to welcome Preston Harrell to the Lawson School of Music teaching staff! Beginning October 12, following our Fall Break, Preston will offer voice and piano instruction to students of varying ages and experience levels.

A lyric baritone and active music educator, Preston is originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Western Kentucky University and a Master of Sacred Music in Voice Performance from the University of Notre Dame. His former voice teachers include Dr. Liza F. Kelly, Dr. Stephen J. Lancaster, and Dr. Kathryn D. Hedlund.

In addition to his extensive vocal training, Preston has completed several years of private piano study—including throughout his collegiate studies—and also plays the organ.

Preston is passionate about helping students of all ages and stages build the skills, confidence, and artistry needed for both traditional and nontraditional musical performance. His favorite part of teaching is guiding each student toward greater musical and artistic freedom while fostering the meaningful human connection that music can create.

We believe Preston’s warmth, musicianship, and thoughtful approach to education will make him a wonderful addition to our studio community. Please join us in giving Mr. Preston a warm Lawson School of Music welcome! 🎹🎤

Next up in our Meet the Music Makers series is our instructor, Carlos Serrano!

If there's a guitar nearby, Carlos probably knows what to do with it! Carlos began playing at 14 and went on to study jazz performance at Kansas State University. His musical world spans jazz, blues, rock, folk, big band, musical theatre and more. At Lawson, he teaches guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, and songwriting. Outside the studio? He's likely gardening, reading, cooking, listening to a podcast or hanging out with his household's impressive collection of dogs and cats. 🐶🐱 We are so thankful for Carlos! Students of all ages love his approach and the way he engages his students.

🎶 3 REASONS TO TAKE MUSIC LESSONS AT ANY AGE! 🎶

Think music lessons are just for kids? Think again! Whether you're 4, 14, 40 or 94, making music can add something pretty incredible to your life.

🧠 1. MUSIC EXERCISES YOUR BRAIN

Learning an instrument or training your voice works memory, listening, coordination, concentration and problem-solving all while you're creating something!

For kids and teens, those skills complement learning in school. For adults, music is a wonderful way to keep learning and challenge yourself or just have fun!

⭐ “They are learning music theory and understanding — not just how to listen and repeat.”
— Google Review

🌟 2. MUSIC BUILDS CONFIDENCE

Learning your first song. Mastering something that once felt impossible. Performing in a recital. Auditioning for a show.

Music teaches us to set goals, work through challenges and discover what we're capable of. One Lawson parent described watching their child grow into a:

⭐ “...confident, passionate, and capable young performer.”
— Google Review

💛 3. MUSIC IS GOOD FOR YOUR WHOLE SELF

Music gives us a place to create, express ourselves, connect and simply have FUN.

For some students, lessons lead toward performance or college. For others, music is a creative outlet after school or work. Both are equally worthwhile. At The Lawson School of Music, we work with children, teens AND adults, from complete beginners to advanced performers.

You don't have to want a career in music. You don't have to already be “musical.” And you definitely don't have to start at five. You just have to start.

⭐ One parent shared that their child “looks forward to weekly lessons and is motivated to practice at home.”

🎶This week we want to take time to introduce you to the Instructors at The Lawson School of Music!🎶

First up in our Meet the Music Makers series is the person who started it all, Ms. Heather Heim (Lawson), Owner & Lead Master Instructor at The Lawson School of Music!

Heather is a professional vocalist, performer, music director and educator with more than 14 years of teaching, vocal coaching experience and stage experience. She holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Campbellsville University and a Bachelor of Music in Voice from Western Kentucky University, with additional training through New York University. Ms. Heim has taught all ages from infants and Pre-K to University Level!

At The Lawson School of Music, Heather teaches voice, piano, acting, musical theatre, Little Notes, group classes, music theory and college/audition prep. Her students have gone on to study performing arts or education at the university level, attend Governor's School for the Arts, perform in honors choirs at Carnegie Hall, land roles in productions, compete in vocal competitions and much more!

But what Heather loves most is helping students discover what music means to each student. Whether gaining confidence or aiming for the stage, every student and every goal is important. Her teaching combines solid technique with an empathetic, individualized approach because there is no one-size-fits-all musician.

When not teaching, you'll probably find her onstage, traveling, reading, practicing yoga or hanging out with her two pugs. 🐾

"Whatever your path, let music be the start."

🎓🎶 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT SPOTLIGHT 🎶

The Lawson School of Music is proud to announce Zoe and Zia Perryman as this year’s recipients of the Travis Mitchell Music Scholarship!

These scholarships were awarded based on the thoughtful essays they submitted and the hard work, dedication, and growth they have demonstrated throughout the past year. Although both students take their lessons virtually, they consistently show wonderful commitment to their musical studies and a desire to learn, grow and represent The Lawson School of Music well.

🎹 Zia Perryman has been playing piano for two years and enjoys practicing with her Nana as she continues strengthening her skills. She loves listening to music, reading, and learning about space. Zia is also a junior musician at her church and can play by ear as well as read music. She is excited to start a new year with The Lawson School of Music

🎹 Zoe Perryman began playing piano at six years old and has played weekly at her church since she was 10. She enjoys many kinds of music, but classical music is her favorite to perform. She has also taught herself to play acoustic guitar!

Please join us in congratulating Zoe and Zia on this well-deserved honor. We are incredibly proud of both of you and can’t wait to see where your musical journeys take you!
