The Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy integrates a rigorous curriculum with the philosophies of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. AVID is a research-based instructional model that encourages students to prepare for and participate in a challenging college preparatory curriculum. In addition to enrolling in honors and AP level courses, students will receive academic support through a specially designed AVID elective, taught by AVID-trained instructors. The Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy selects students with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher, who demonstrate academic potential and are committed to preparing for post-secondary education. Students will comply with a rigorous academic course sequence which includes: four years of English, four years of Mathematics, four years of Science, four years of Social Studies, three years of World Language, and one year of World Language Literature. In addition, eleventh and twelfth graders will pursue a concentration in leadership studies. Students enrolled in the Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy are expected to comply with all rules, regulations and policies of the Academy and the district. Students will be required to wear school uniforms, perform community service, and take ownership in the AVID program. The combination of rigorous and relevant courses, a variety of elective subjects, and the philosophy of the AVID program give students the opportunity to excel in high school and beyond.

Celebrating Student Agency at Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy

On September 18th, Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy joined schools across the nation in celebrating AVID Day, recognizing the impact of AVID on student growth, opportunity, and success.

As New Jerseyโ€™s newest National AVID Demonstration School, our AVID focus for this year is student agency. Aligned with our AVID Site Team Goals and Annual School Plan, this focus supports our commitment to increasing students' sense of belonging while helping them develop the skills, confidence, and ownership needed for college, career, and life readiness.

To support this work, AVID Site Coordinator Melissa Wells created a coloring and activity book aligned to the AVID Weeks-at-a-Glance Curriculum for grades 9-12 to be used throughout the year during Choice Fridays. The resource promotes self-reflection, collaboration, and meaningful discussion while encouraging students to explore their identities, strengths, goals, and connection to the school community.

This year's AVID Day theme, "Because of AVID, I...", invites students and educators to reflect on the experiences and opportunities that have shaped their journey and celebrate the power of belonging, growth, and student success.
