The Literacy Connection

The Literacy Connection We are a non-profit organization dedicated to helping adults acquire fundamental English literacy skills.

Our office is located on the second floor of Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, Illinois. The Literacy Connection’s largest service area is within Kane County. With the exception of children who receive services through our Family Literacy programs, the agency only accepts adult learners who must be at least 18 years old. Learners who are best suited for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program often have circumstances that make them prefer one-on-one tutoring to the structure of the community college’s ESL program. Some factors include limited education, discomfort in a traditional classroom setting, specific educational or personal goals, personal learning gaps, or erratic work schedules. The agency is designed to accommodate the needs of these adult learners by matching them with volunteers who offer flexibility to meet their individual needs. Our learners are single adults, mothers, fathers, and grandparents—all eager to receive help to make a better life for them and their families in the United States.

We had such a great time at our "Every Hand Holds a Story" Resource Fair last Thursday at the Centre of Elgin's Heritage Ballroom. Special "thanks" to our sponsors: 79 Ratio, Alero Financial, Senator Cristina Castro and Maria Copland, FNBO Mortgage Loan Officer, NMLS #232748 for helping us present this event to our community. We were happy to host 25+ social services organizations and local businesses who brought important resources and engaging activities to our community. And lastly, thanks so much to NIU Mariachi (Northern Illinois University) for providing lively entertainment. Be sure to check out WNIJ this week for interviews provided by some of our participants.

Tomorrow is our Family Literacy Resource Fair! Please join us as we celebrate National Literacy Month and Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, September 17th from 5-7pm at the Heritage Ballroom inside The Centre of Elgin.

NIU Mariachi Band will perform from 5:30-6:30pm. We have over 25 vendors handing out free resources and activities. WNIJ/WNIU will be there to interview attendees in English and Spanish on their experiences with literacy. And we will have a 50-50 Raffle. It will be a great time!

Welcome back to our FeelFluent Chasers ESL learners!

This English as a Second Language class is part of our Adult Volunteer Literacy program. The class is led by a paid instructor and supported by a volunteer tutor. Classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-7pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am - 11:30a.m.

Our classes are free! Interested learners only need to pay $10 for a pre-assessment to determine their literacy level before enrolling.

Also, we're always looking for volunteer tutors who have a passion for assisting adult learners in achieving their goals. The training is free and at your own pace.
