Every year we host a summer graduation ceremony for those students who need just a little extra time, for whatever reason, to earn their diploma. They are often models of perseverance and grit and that is especially true of this year's class who endured the challenges of the past year. Today, 70 Class of 2021 graduates walked the stage in a ceremony at Larkin High School. Board of Education members, school and district administrators and faculty, and proud family members joined the afternoon ceremony led by Summer School Principal Dr. Steve Tucker. Below are the remarks, delivered in English and Spanish, by graduate Christina Burgos:

Administrators, teachers, parents, and fellow graduates, good afternoon.

If there is anything that I’ve learned from this whole experience called surviving a pandemic, it’s that we are not all on the same boat. Some of us are in yachts, some of us in rowboats, and some of us are clinging on for dear life to a piece of driftwood. I think a lot of us here today were caught in that last situation.

We had to overcome so many unforeseeable obstacles, school being just one of many. There have been many sacrifices, lots of reflection and growth, lots of hard work that maybe sometimes goes unseen. This diploma that we receive today may not have been achieved in the most conventional of ways, but it was still achieved. It’s the physical embodiment of our hard work, and a representation of our achievements.

Graduating means different things for different people. From here, we are each taking our own path, whether it be to college, trade school, working a job, anything really. This year taught us that life is too short not to do what you want to do with your life. And we worked too hard to make it here, each with our own struggles and hardships. We decided to be here today. We made it here today. We graduate today.

We did it. And we’re going to keep doing it.

Students at Sycamore Trails Elementary School in Bartlett have raised thousands of dollars over the years to help build a maternity ward for their sister school community in Ghana, Africa. Sixth grade teacher Jim Reed has led the effort with Two Pennies Ministry. Here he gives a tour of the completed maternity ward, where nine babies have already been born! Bartlett High School band director Eric Holloway and Eastview Middle School band director Alex Rivera led “Band-o-Rama” at BHS today. The event is an annual tradition that features incoming 6th through 12th grade band students getting together for a day of team-building. The students played with water balloons, held relay races, ate lunch together, and learned two new songs that they played at the end of the day. For the youngest students, COVID-19 meant that this was the first time they got to play their instrument in a concert setting! Some high schoolers performed with the younger students and served as peer leaders, too. #WeAreU46 School District U-46 Fine Arts Department
