🎵 We’re All in This Together

Here’s a look at some of the people, stories and events happening across U-46 this week:

🎬 During summer recess, students in Beacon Academy’s summer internship program created a short documentary reflecting on Elgin High School’s 157-year history and the opportunities U-46 has provided students over the years. Watch at youtu.be/QOeYWPCo1A4

📚 South Elgin High School teachers Walt Gola and Samantha Kochanski, who were both in the classroom during the Sept. 11 attacks 25 years ago, were featured in a Daily Herald article. Read the full story at u-46.org.

📚Bartlett High School teachers presented to students about the Sept. 11 attacks, sharing personal memories and historical perspectives.

💀 The third annual El Trote de las Calacas 5K and walk is set for Oct. 10 at Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin. The event, hosted by the U-46 Educational Foundation and Gail Borden Public Library District Foundation, will include music, food, performances and a cultural marketplace. Sign up at u-46.org/trote

📸 The Kane County Student Photography Contest received a record 417 submissions this year. Bartlett High School’s Olivier Tokarz was among the top 10 entries in Week 1.

As U-46 transitioned to a true middle school model where sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are brought together, some of our middle schools have been expanded and renovated to welcome their growing student communities.

Last month, Kenyon Woods and Kimball Middle Schools celebrated the completion of their new spaces with ribbon-cutting ceremonies. These improvements will help create engaging, supportive learning environments for students for years to come! 🎉✂️

🚌 As we begin another great school year in U-46, Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Johnson has an important reminder for our community: Please slow down, stay alert and help keep our students safe.

With school buses back on the road and students traveling to and from school, drivers should allow extra time, follow buses at a safe distance and never pass a school bus when its stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing.

Our shared commitment to safety helps ensure every student arrives ready for a great day of learning.

A groundbreaking ceremony marked an exciting new chapter for the Elgin community as School District U-46 officially celebrated the start of construction on a new elementary school along the Fox River.

The new school will be the first elementary school U-46 has built in Elgin in more than 20 years, replacing a building with roots dating back nearly 140 years. Designed with today’s learners in mind, the school will feature flexible instructional and collaboration spaces, abundant natural light, a two-story library, outdoor learning areas, dedicated preschool classrooms and more.

“What a privilege it is to be able to design and build a school from the ground up with today’s learners in mind,” Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Johnson said.

Made possible through the community’s support of the Unite U-46 initiative, this project represents an investment not only in a historic Elgin neighborhood, but in expanded opportunities for students to learn, connect and thrive. Construction is expected to be completed in time to welcome students in fall 2028.

🎵 We’re All in This Together

Today, U-46 launches a new Friday feature highlighting the people, partnerships, and moments across our learning community.

This week:

🎓 South Elgin High School senior Mariah M. won a $40,000 scholarship after starting her college list on BigFuture.

🏫 Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Johnson visited a second-grade ESL classroom at Creekside Elementary School on the first day of school.

🎒 State Rep. Dan Ugaste selected Fox Meadow Elementary School to receive school supplies collected through his donation drive.

🏆 Hawk Hollow Middle School and its staff received the Community Spirit Award at a recent Village of Bartlett Board meeting.

💬 The Kane County Health Department wants to hear from U-46 families and is asking parents and caregivers to complete a brief survey.

📚 As a proud promotional partner of the GPS Parent Series, U-46 invites families, educators, and community members to join an upcoming session.

🗳️ U-46 seniors are invited to an upcoming Voter Information Workshop to learn about the importance of voting and how, when, and where to register and cast a ballot in the November election and future elections.

Today is the first day of the 2026-27 school year for approximately 33,000 students in kindergarten through high school in School District U-46.

We are excited to see all of our students back in the classroom, including the new improvements to our learning experiences across the district.

The Tiger Community cut the ribbon on a newly renovated and expanded Kimball Middle School, kicking off an exciting new chapter for students, employees and the Elgin community!

The newly expanded learning environment will welcome sixth graders for the first time this fall as Kimball transitions to a true sixth through eighth grade middle school model. The building features new classrooms, science labs, collaborative spaces, an updated athletics area and a bright new cafetorium, which were all designed to support learning, connection and belonging.

“But a beautiful building alone doesn't make a great school. Our students, employees, families, and the relationships we build together are what will bring these spaces to life,” said Kimball Principal Charlotte Coleman.

Thank you to our U-46 community, staff and partners for helping turn that shared vision into reality. We’re excited for all that’s ahead as the next generation of Tigers learn, grow and ROAR at Kimball!

Our youngest learners entering preschool are greeted with new friends and welcoming classrooms as they began their educational journey in U-46.

This year, even more families will have the opportunity to experience this milestone.

Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, U-46 will offer preschool classrooms at 26 elementary school sites, expanding access to high-quality early learning across the district.

U-46 provides a free developmental screening for all 3- and 4-year-old children who reside in the district. The screening captures a snapshot of a child's growth in language, cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development. Children who complete the screening may qualify to attend one of U-46’s free preschool programs.
