A 50-year-old time capsule created by the Class of 1976 was opened at Elgin High School, with much of the material in it pertaining to the United States Bicentennial. Artifacts included the school's newspaper, a pet rock (with instructions included), photographs from around the campus, department store catalogs, and a school dress code document that banned t-shirts and sweatshirts, but allowed Bermuda shorts to be worn "at the direction of the principal." Attendees at the brief ceremony included Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Johnson, Elgin Mayor David Kaptain, Elgin High School Principal Avelira Rodriguez Gonzalez, and about a dozen EHS alumni.
