A big thank you to RISE Director, Gineen Vargas, and RISE student, Katie Schachelmayer for coming out to our Sport Sociology class earlier this month. Katie has been involved in Special Olympics since 2011 and it was great to hear the impact it has had on her life! We appreciate your stories and insights to support our understanding of special populations and sports!

Right now it’s 5 degrees and blankets are being shared at warming shelters in Elgin. These blankets were made this morning by over 50 students from two departments—Exercise & Sport Science and Business. We are blessed to continue this annual event and give back to our community. Senior, Brian Robinson, is wrapping up his internship at Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center, part of

"The best thing I've learned during my internship has to be the ability to multitask. I've been in a situation where I had to do assignments, work with incoming patrons at the front desk, and prepare to coach for a flag football class all at the same time."

Senior, Thomas Moran, is thriving as an intern at Athletes HQ this fall! ⚾️

He says: "I have had the opportunity to listen and watch many lessons from professional baseball players and coaches. For me, gaining as much knowledge as I can is very important not only for my baseball career, but for the possibility of having a coaching job in the near future."

Maddie is an intern at LifeTime Fitness this fall 💪

Maddie says: "Lifetime has allowed me the opportunity to grow in a safe environment. I am conquering fears and reaching goals! I love that I have been given the freedom and trust to interact with clients to help them with their fitness journeys."

Check out senior, Gunnar Boley, interning at the Centre of Elgin this semester!

Gunnar says:
"I do many things for the City of Elgin, but I love nothing more than to be a gym teacher for kids. I have the pleasure of creating daily activities and playing games in the field house. The best part of it all is that I get the chance to be able to touch their lives and leave a positive impact!"
