🌿✨ Dreamcatchers: Creating with Nature & Tradition ✨🌿

During our summer program at Green Friends Montessori, the children created their own dreamcatchers using willow branches gathered from our very own backyard playground. 🌿

Traditionally associated with the Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) people, dreamcatchers are handmade woven hoops traditionally created to protect sleepers, with the web believed to catch or filter dreams and allow good dreams to pass through. They have become a widely recognized symbol of protection, care, and connection.

Ms. Treya shared with the children the history and cultural significance of dreamcatchers within Native American tradition, inviting them to approach this craft with curiosity, respect, and appreciation for the traditions from which it comes.

The children wrapped their favorite colors of yarn around the branch, carefully weaving and winding with their hands. Each child had the freedom to choose how they wanted to decorate their creation, making every dreamcatcher wonderfully unique.
What a beautiful Montessori experience—working with natural materials, developing fine-motor skills, making creative choices, and learning through stories and cultural connection. 🌎💚

From Imitation to Leadership 🎶

Children naturally observe, imitate, and model what they see around them. The students began to become teachers for one another.

They watched each other, listened to each other, and gradually took turns becoming the conductors of the music. They were modeling the music practice they had experienced with Ms. Treya while preparing for their graduation ceremony performance two months prior.

This was more than a music performance. It was a living expression of Montessori leadership: confidence, cooperation, and the understanding that each child has something valuable to contribute.

Yesterday, our final Around the World Adventure of the summer took us to the rich, colorful, and vibrant country of India. 🇮🇳

We are deeply grateful to our beloved teacher and one of our wonderful school families for preparing such a meaningful and engaging presentation that brought India’s culture to life for our children.
Our journey began by listening to India’s national anthem, and many of us even tried to sing along! Throughout the presentation, beautiful traditional music filled the classroom, creating a joyful and peaceful atmosphere.

We explored a colorful book filled with fascinating facts about India, learning about its customs, wildlife, traditional clothing, musical instruments, and diverse landscapes. The children were especially captivated by the intricate mehndi (henna) designs traditionally painted on the hands and feet of women during weddings and other celebrations. We also learned that henna has a practical purpose, helping to cool the body during India’s warm climate.

Our imaginations traveled to the magnificent Palace of the Winds (Hawa Mahal) in Jaipur, where we discovered how its hundreds of beautifully carved windows allowed cool breezes to flow through the building long before air conditioning existed. We admired photographs of some of India’s incredible wildlife, including the majestic white tiger, gentle elephants, graceful pink flamingos, and many other fascinating animals.

We also learned about traditional Indian music and saw a musician wearing a turban playing the veena, one of India’s oldest and most treasured stringed instruments.

One of the highlights of the day was sharing a delicious homemade Indian meal of rice, flavorful curry, and samosas, giving everyone the opportunity to experience the wonderful tastes and aromas of Indian cuisine.

What a beautiful way to conclude our Around the World Adventures! Over the past weeks, our students have explored cultures from across the globe, discovering that while every country has its own unique traditions, languages, music, and foods, we all share a common humanity. Thank you to every family who generously shared a piece of their heritage with us. Together, we have nurtured curiosity, respect, and a love for the many beautiful cultures that make up our world. 🌍❤️

Today, our Around the World Adventures at Green Friends Montessori took us to Germany!🇩🇪🌎✨

One of our families shared their country of origin through its traditions, stories, music, clothing, and delicious cuisine.

We admired the beautiful traditional Bavarian Dirndl dresses the girls wore, heirlooms that had been passed down through generations, and learned about the traditional Lederhosen worn by men. We also learned a few German words, “Guten Tag” (Good day/Hello) and “Auf Wiedersehen” (Goodbye).

We listened to a Brothers Grimm story “The Elves and the Shoemaker,” and we discovered that many fairy tales we know today, including Snow White, come from the Brothers Grimm collection.

The children loved listening to traditional Alpine yodeling and had so much fun trying it themselves before dancing together to the lively music.

Then it was time to enjoy Germany’s delicious cuisine! We had a chance to try Bratwurst, cabbage, raspberry-filled Spitzbuben (“mischievous children”) cookies the father made, and giant pretzels with mustard. For many of us, it was our very first time trying a pretzel with mustard!

Thank you wonderful family for sharing your heritage and making our trip to Germany so memorable.

Today, our Around the World Adventures at Green Friends Montessori took us to Mexico! 🇲🇽🌎✨

We are so thankful to Brook’s parents for sharing their beautiful culture and traditions with us. We discovered where Mexico is on the map and learned a few simple Spanish words, including ¡Hola! (Hello) and ¡Adiós! (Goodbye). Brook’s mother also taught us the names of several colors in Spanish and sang a beautiful song about animals. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as we had just sung Old MacDonald Had a Farm during music class. The children loved hearing how animal sounds are a little different in Spanish!

When asked what she loves most about Mexico, Ms. Katie shared that it is the strong sense of family—how extended families come together to celebrate traditions, holidays, and one another’s company.

Our culinary adventure was just as exciting! We enjoyed delicious beef tacos with a variety of authentic toppings, including marinated cactus (nopales), queso fresco, guacamole, and more. The children especially loved the black beans and were asking for seconds.

Throughout the day, whenever I played traditional Mexican music, including “La Cucaracha,” the children couldn’t resist jumping up to dance. Their joyful enthusiasm filled the classroom with smiles and laughter.

A heartfelt thank you to Brook’s family for giving us such a memorable glimpse into the rich culture, language, music, and flavors of Mexico.

Tomorrow, our Around the World Adventures take us back to Europe as we explore Germany! 🇲🇽➡️🇩🇪

🌍✨Around the World Adventures: Croatia! 🇵🇭🌎

Today, our Around the World Adventures took us to beautiful Croatia, the country of origin of Olivia’s mom, who shared her culture with us through stories, language, and delicious homemade food and chocolates that everyone enjoyed!

We learned that Croatia is located in southeastern Europe, near Italy, with the sparkling Adriatic Sea along its western coast. Looking at a map, the shape of Croatia even resembles a flying dove!

Olivia’s mom taught us many Croatian words and phrases and read us a beautiful Croatian children’s story. We also discovered that Croatia’s famous red-and-white checkerboard crest is one of the oldest national symbols in Europe. We learned that inventor Nikola Tesla was born in what is now Croatia, that the modern necktie (cravat) originated there, that the mechanical pencil—often called the “press pen”—was invented by a Croatian inventor, and that the lovable Dalmatian dog breed takes its name from Croatia’s Dalmatia region.

Thank you, Olivia’s mom, for sharing your heritage and giving us such a fun and memorable journey around the world without ever leaving our classroom!

Tomorrow, our journey continues as we travel to Mexico! 🇭🇷➡️🇲🇽

🌍✨Around the World Adventures: Poland 🇵🇱🌍

Today our Around the World Adventures took us to Poland, the country of origin of Ms. Treya, Ms. Aga, and her daughters, Claudia and Vicky.

Claudia and Vicky shared photos from their trip to the beautiful Baltic Sea city of Gdańsk and told the children about their travels. Everyone enjoyed learning a few Polish words and phrases, including “Dzień Dobry” (Good morning), “Cześć” (Hello), “Na zdrowie!” (Bless you), and “Jak się masz?” (How are you?), and even tried a few challenging Polish tongue twisters!

Ms. Treya introduced the children to Poland’s surprisingly diverse landscape. Although the country is only about the size of Texas, it is home to the Baltic Sea, the majestic Tatra Mountains, the beautiful Masurian Lake District, and even the Błędów Desert.

The children also learned about Białowieża National Park, one of Europe’s last primeval forests and home to around 800 European bison. This protected UNESCO World Heritage Site has remained largely untouched, preserving a rare glimpse of the ancient forests that once covered much of Europe.

To end our adventure, everyone enjoyed traditional Polish comfort food—pierogi and sweet kołaczki.

Next week, our journey continues as we travel to Croatia!
