We posted this banner in the gym today and let everyone take a guess. The kids that did not follow the directions and said, “ I love you” and “love to read” show us how much this program means to them. 💕 Project Transformation is a place where kids are loved, fed, and poured into for 8 weeks each summer. Reading is only a part of what we do.

What is your guess for how many minutes each of our campers has read in the first 5 weeks of camp?

Last week we had City Day at PT El Reno!

For those that do not know, City Day is the day when Wesley United Methodist Church - El Reno turns into a town. Half of the campers work in the morning while the others are citizens, and they switch at lunch. Some of the jobs/shops include pet adoption (stuffed animals), gift shop, movies (with fresh popcorn), boutique, hair and nail salon, dance club, tattoo parlor, sand art, sports rental, karaoke, and drink bar (frappes and mocktails). We have police officers that write tickets for speeding (running) and other rule infractions, and those receiving tickets must report to the Judge and can elect to pay a fine or serve time in "jail." This year, we had peaceful protests and trials, including on whether someone hit another camper on purpose or accident.

The campers walk into the church down a hallway transformed to look like a downtown street, and they have free access to freely go anywhere in the church without a closed door to spend their money and experience the City Day magic. The fun and chaos are never ending, as are the passive lessons in citizenship, budgeting, making change, and even the First Amendment freedom of speech and right to peacefully assemble.

The teachers were given jobs of Mayor, Safety Director, Senator (fielded all complaints and suggestions), Medical Director, Photojournalist, Public Relations Director, and Public Works Officer. This year, we were extra blessed to have the help of the Redlands Upper Bound high school students and teachers who helped the campers in the stores.

Many of these photos were taken by Kate Menz with the El Reno Tribune. Watch for her article and more photographs soon.

As you plan your week, remember Wednesday (July 1st) is pool day and Thursday (July 2nd) is a camp holiday! We will try to send home pool reminder notes on Tuesday.
