Journalism in July is a workshop for high school students interested in studying journalism sponsored by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and Borderzine.com. The purpose of the workshop is to promote careers in journalism particularly among students who may have faced barriers to practicing journalism and pursuing careers in the news field. Based at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Journalis

m in July recruits 20 students from high schools in the El Paso area to train them in the basics of journalism and how to use digital tools to tell stories on the web. During the 8-day residential workshop, student journalists stay in the university campus dormitories. UTEP faculty and volunteer media professionals teach news reporting and writing as well as video, audio and photography practices. They visit print and broadcast media outlets, and ultimately produce a bilingual, multimedia student web magazine filled with news and enterprise stories and featuring digital photography and video. There is no cost for the students to attend; the program pays for tuition, housing and meals and logistics. The University of Texas at El Paso in conjunction with the Dow Jones News Fund have sponsored Borderzine’s Journalism in July workshop for 12 years. We also receive support and in-kind donations from local sponsors such as UTEP’s Department of Communication, the Hervey Foundation, El Paso Community Foundation, El Paso Electric Company and El Paso Times among others.
