Because placement matters when it comes to facial development, development of the jaw, how the teeth come in, and even airway. The tongue is the natural palate expander and if a child has a tongue thrust he is
1: putting atypical pressure on the teeth that will move them.
2. not resting his tongue where it’s supposed to be: suctioned lightly to the palate.
So if you’re a parent who just wants to be able to understand your child, any SLP can teach compensation.😏
But if you care that your child is optimized (breathing, talking, eating) you will find an SLP who targets CORRECT placement of the tongue and jaw.
The symptom is the signal. The disordered speech, the gagging with certain foods, the mouth breathing, the tired eyes. These are signs that something deeper is going on and it’s our job as clinicians to figure it out and if we don’t know how…refer to someone who can 💁🏻♀️
