Fab Lab El Paso /Fab/rication /Lab/ratory El Paso provides STEM and digital skilling for community development

Our core belief is that the tools and resources to actualize creative ideas should be available to as many community members as possible. Fab Lab El Paso supports open source digital design and hackable personal fabrication machineries so that community members can utilize high-tech, cost-effective tools for actualizing creative ideas. Our programs in design, engineering, electronics, science and computation promote empiricism, innovative thinking, and the scientific method through project-based learning. At Fab Lab El Paso, we aim to provide accessible educational experiences for students and professionals to support the development of more ingenious and resourceful products and businesses in our region and enrich our local communities. We are also a kids and women friendly makerspace and hackerspace for the Makers, Hackers, Tinkerers, and DIY enthusiasts in the region.

Our BioFab Future Lab campers got hands-on with sustainable innovation, exploring how recycled wood waste can be transformed into something entirely new!

During a special virtual session, Damián Arezzo, founder of .bio, shared his work with Fab Lab Barcelona developing innovative bio-wood composites. Inspired by his process, our campers tested his recipe themselves and created their own products using the materials.

From experimenting with biomaterials to reimagining waste as a resource, our campers discovered that sustainability starts with creativity and a willingness to try something new! 💚

Join Tech Frontier for our 3rd Annual Tech Frontier Summit as we bring together K–12 educators, workforce leaders, industry professionals, and community innovators to connect, share ideas, and shape the future of El Paso.

We’re excited to welcome Alyssa Saenz, an El Paso native and Robotics Flight Controller for the International Space Station at NASA, as our keynote speaker. Alyssa supports robotic operations aboard the ISS and works with astronauts and flight controllers on space robotics. At the Summit, she’ll share insights from her experience in spaceflight operations, robotics, STEM, and innovation.

🌱✨ BioFab Future Lab Camp Recap!

Turning yesterday’s waste into tomorrow’s design! ♻️ Last week, our campers explored the world of biomaterials, discovering how natural, eco-friendly ingredients can be transformed into sustainable materials for everything from wearable accessories to furniture.

One of the highlights was welcoming Catherine Söderberg Esper, Creative Director & Founder of Matter Matters! Catherine gave our campers an inside look at how her local materials research and architectural design lab is redefining sustainability. Through hands-on samples and creative exploration, students discovered how waste can become an opportunity for innovative design.

A huge thank you to Catherine for inspiring our campers to think creatively, explore sustainable solutions, and imagine a future built with biomaterials! 🌎💚

Through our partnership with Museums and Cultural Affairs Department - City of El Paso and El Paso Mexican American Cultural Center, Tech Frontier and Fab Lab El Paso are helping educators and professionals build the technical skills needed to bring emerging technologies into their work.

Michael led a CNC Machining Professional Development session for the MACC’s education and curatorial team, providing hands-on training with their new Inventables X-Carve Pro. Participants learned how to set up jobs, create design files, select tools, and safely operate the equipment.

By expanding technical skills through professional development, we’re helping educators and professionals build knowledge they can bring back to their communities, strengthening the connection between learning, hands-on experience, and workforce pathways.

Our Fab Lab STEAM Team joined the SISD Partners in Education Expo, bringing this year’s theme, “The Case for Collaboration,” to life with an X-Files and sci-fi-inspired interactive experience. 🔎👽

Through an escape-room-style investigation featuring coded electronics, laser-cut and 3D-printed elements, and hands-on problem-solving, the team showcased the creativity and technical skills behind STEAM, and took home the Golden Magnifying Award for Best Booth! 🏆

We’re proud to recognize our Fab Lab STEAM Team for their participation in this years Socorro Independent School District Partners in Education Expo. They brought the theme “The Case for Collaboration” to life through a X-Files and Sci-Fi inspired booth experience.

The team created an interactive, escape-room-style investigation that combined storytelling, custom coded electronic interactives, and hands-on problem-solving. The experience featured bespoke fabricated elements including a laser-cut housing for the electronics, and 3D printed extra-terrestrial evidence showcasing the team’s creativity and technical skills.

Their innovative approach earned them the Golden Magnifying Award for Best Booth! 🏆

Congratulations to our STEAM Team on this well-deserved recognition and for demonstrating the power of collaboration, creativity, and hands-on learning. Our Director of Operations Michael Nelson was invited to be a featured presenter for La Nube and Texas Mutuals, Texas Mutual Generational Learning Grant program expanding Desert Bloomers, which is a major investment in early childhood development for regional caregivers.

Michael's workshops focused maker pedagogy rooted in concepts from the MIT Media Lab, and on the impact of technology in early education by leveraging tools and technologies that do not involve electronics or screen time. Care providers practiced computational thinking with physical tools and hardware, then created their own cardboard arcade games with child friendly tools like Makedo, and Beaver Bots to prove that young makers can create a physical world that are more engaging and rewarding that any digital world can simulate.
