Our core belief is that the tools and resources to actualize creative ideas should be available to as many community members as possible. Fab Lab El Paso supports open source digital design and hackable personal fabrication machineries so that community members can utilize high-tech, cost-effective tools for actualizing creative ideas. Our programs in design, engineering, electronics, science and

computation promote empiricism, innovative thinking, and the scientific method through project-based learning. At Fab Lab El Paso, we aim to provide accessible educational experiences for students and professionals to support the development of more ingenious and resourceful products and businesses in our region and enrich our local communities. We welcomed Instructional Technology educators from to our Fab Lab El Paso makerspace classroom for a hands-on professional development workshop focusing on updates from the international Fab Lab network, making with AI, and getting hands on with some of our favorite tools and educational technologies.💡

Our Director of Operations Michael Nelson was invited to be a featured presenter for La Nube and Texas Mutuals, Texas Mutual Generational Learning Grant program expanding Desert Bloomers, which is a major investment in early childhood development for regional caregivers.

Michael's workshops focused maker pedagogy rooted in concepts from the MIT Media Lab, and on the impact of technology in early education by leveraging tools and technologies that do not involve electronics or screen time. Care providers practiced computational thinking with physical tools and hardware, then created their own cardboard arcade games with child friendly tools like Makedo, and Beaver Bots to prove that young makers can create a physical world that are more engaging and rewarding that any digital world can simulate.

On the final day of FAB26, our Tech Frontier and Fab Lab El Paso team explored the conference's Systems & Scaling track, focusing on what it takes to grow and sustain the global Fab Lab network and expand its impact in communities around the world.

Through inspiring keynote sessions and discussions, we gained valuable insights into the importance of collaboration, sustainable partnerships, and long-term strategies that help makerspaces continue to innovate, grow, and create meaningful opportunities for future generations.

To conclude an incredible week, our team also had the opportunity to tour some of Boston's leading innovation hubs, including the Autodesk Technology Center, Ginkgo Bioworks , and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for Bits and Atoms. These visits offered a firsthand look at cutting-edge research, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies, leaving us inspired with new ideas to bring back to our makerspace and community in El Paso.

As our journey at FAB26 continued, our Tech Frontier and Fab Lab El Paso team explored how innovation extends beyond technology to create stronger, more resilient communities.

Through inspiring keynote sessions and engaging discussions centered on People & Planet, we discovered how Fab Labs are driving sustainability, local innovation, and community impact by rethinking how we create, share, and steward resources. These conversations reinforced the powerful role makerspaces play in building solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

As the week continued at FAB26, our Tech Frontier and Fab Lab El Paso team explored even more opportunities to learn, collaborate, and connect with the global maker community.

From inspiring keynote sessions on the future of robotics, artificial intelligence, digital fabrication, and education to interactive workshops and meaningful conversations with innovators from around the world, every experience offered new perspectives on how emerging technologies are shaping the future of learning and making.

During the Education & Learning track, our Executive Director, Cathy Chen-Arriaga, presented Smart Makers, highlighting how makerspaces can empower students to develop the technical, collaborative, and critical-thinking skills needed for tomorrow's workforce through hands-on digital fabrication experiences.

Beyond the sessions, our team explored new technologies, exchanged ideas with fellow educators and makers, and discovered innovative approaches that will help strengthen the makerspace experiences we bring to our community in El Paso.

🚀 We wrapped up our summer camp season with Cosmic Quest: A Space Fantasy RPG Maker Camp!

Throughout the week, campers created their own space explorers from the ground up by designing unique characters with their own personalities and specialties. They learned 3D modeling by creating custom dice trays, handcrafted and painted their own character miniatures, designed laser-cut name tags, built collaborative 3D worlds, and wrapped up the week with an epic space tabletop RPG where teamwork and creativity saved the F.A.B. Odyssey.

Tech Frontier and Fab Lab El Paso team had the incredible opportunity to attend FAB26 global Fab Lab Conference & Symposium, an immersive technosocial conference that brings together educators, researchers, makers, innovators, and industry leaders from around the world to explore the future of digital fabrication and emerging technologies.

During our first day at the conference, we dove into the emerging tools and technologies that are transforming digital fabrication and reshaping society. We explored topics from open-source machines to AI, quantum to space tech—what’s next is being made right now.

Beyond the keynote stage, our team participated in hands-on workshops, explored emerging technologies, connected with makers and innovators from around the world, and exchanged ideas that will help strengthen the makerspace experiences we bring to our community in El Paso, Texas.

Here's a look back at last week's FAB Project Fab: Advanced Manufacturing camp! ⚙️✨

Throughout the week, campers explored different manufacturing processes and learned how today's technologies are changing the way products are made. They used 3D modeling and product design to create a functional 3D-printed prototype that solved a real-life problem.

Campers also learned 2D design for laser cutting, created their own finger-joint display boxes, and finished their projects by hand-soldering electronics to light up their designs.

🎭 Creativity took center stage at our Theater Tech: Backstage Production Studio camp! 🎭

Throughout the week, campers where behind the scenes to discover what it takes to bring a live theater production to life. Working as a production team, they rotated through different stations, each focused on creating a unique set piece or prop for the final performance.

Campers learned hands-on skills like sewing, woodworking, and safely using makerspace equipment as they built physical props like; fences, bushes, trees, chimneys, and Grandma's bed! Our Digital Team designed and created the digital backgrounds that completed the stage, combining technology with theatrical design.

At the end of the week, all of their hard work came to life as campers from La Nube's theater camp performed Little Red Riding Hood at the MACC, giving our campers the the opportunity to see their work become part of a live production. 🎬🌟
