Dia de los Mu***os, the celebration of the Day of the Dead, is
coming up soon in the borderland. One of the most colorful
events will be held Nov. 4 at El Paso’s historic Concordia
Cemetery.
On the Oct. 21 broadcast of “The El Paso History Radio Show,”
hosted by Andrew Polk, we’ll get details of this year’s
celebration from Cris Martin from the Concordia Heritage
Association.
Then Martha Vera, the honorary Spanish council in El Paso,
talks about the upcoming Paella Festival of the Sociedad

Preserving Texas History
Preservation Texas, the private, nonprofit organization that
focuses on preserving and protecting the state’s history, will
open an office in El Paso by the end of the year. The office will
cover nine counties west of the Pecos River, with an emphasis
on El Paso, and is supported by a $300,000 grant from El Paso
County.
On the Sept. 30 broadcast of “The El Paso History Radio
Show,” get details about the new office and its goals. In this
encore presentation, host Andrew J. Polk talks with Evan
Thompson, executive director of Preservation Texas, and
architectural historian Max Grossman, who serves on the
nonprofit’s volunteer board.

Researching Indigenous Peoples
El Paso and the Southwest has been home to many groups of indigenous peoples. Today, the Tiguas of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo live in the area, as well as Mescalero Apaches and others.
Historically, it was home to the Piros and Mansos. And research is
ongoing into pre-historic peoples who lived at White Sands and other locations.

History Tours
It’s never too late to learn about El Paso’s rich history and heritage. And if you’re of a certain age, there are special classes and tours that take you right to where the history happened. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UTEP is offering tours about El Paso history as part of their many classes for adults 50 and over.
