Eta Delta was chartered November 11, 1972, at the University of Texas at El Paso, by the Eta Pi Omega alumni chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African-American college women. Membership is primarily for college educated women, but not all members have attended college.
