Danny Olivas, UTEP Unite to Pursue Space Initiatives

What: Announcement with former astronaut Danny Olivas about space initiatives

When: 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13

Where: Chemistry and Computer Science Building courtyard

Former NASA astronaut and UTEP alumnus Danny Olivas, Ph.D., will join UTEP President Diana Natalicio and Ann Gates, Ph.D., director of UTEP’s Cyber-ShARE Center of Excellence and professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science, for an announcement about his new partnership with the University regarding space initiatives.

UTEP is home to the Center for Space Exploration Technology Research (cSETR), a NASA-affiliated University Research Center that promotes research and education in propulsion and energy engineering. cSETR actively conducts a wide range of analytical, experimental and computational research, which includes the study of liquid methane, a new form of green fuel that could power space shuttles, and the construction of bricks using moon dust to create structures on the moon.

In addition, the University is home to a NASA Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) and Aerospace Education Lab (AEL) to enhance opportunity and excitement in science, technology, engineering and math in K-12 students.

NASA's Office of Education is accepting applications for graduate fellows for fall 2013 as a part of the NASA Harriett G. Jenkins Graduate Fellowship Program. Since 2001, this activity has supported 211 students as they obtained Masters and Doctoral degrees. The graduate fellowship seeks to support the development of the future STEM workforce through the increased number of graduate degrees awarded to underrepresented and underserved persons (women, minorities and persons with disabilities) in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The goal is to address the agency's mission-specific workforce needs and target areas of national need in minority STEM representation. The fellowship award includes tuition offset, student stipend and NASA center research opportunities up to $45,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Abstract submissions are due August 9, 2013.

Applications should be submitted through the NASA One Stop Shopping Initiative at https://intern.nasa.gov/ossi/web/public/main/index.cfm?solarAction=view&subAction=content&contentCode=HOME_PAGE_FELLOWSHIPS . Applicants should be sure to select “fellowship” for the type of application.
