Latin American & Border Studies research assistants, Vanessa Almada and Felipe Martinez, enjoying a productive summer! Vanessa was awarded a US Department of Education Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Summer Fellowship in São Paulo, Brazil. Felipe is learning and working in Washington, D.C., through the Graduate Archer Fellowship Program. This program was established by the University of Texas System to bring graduate and medical students interested in policy and politics to our nation’s capital to learn about the federal government and public service. Graduate research assistants for Ct for Inter-Amer Border Studies showcase their posters at Geo X Day. This event is a celebration of geospatial innovation, student research, and academic excellence. Awards recognized top undergraduate and graduate projects using GIS, remote sensing, AI/ML, and geospatial techniques.

Applications are currently being accepted for the master's program in Latin American and Border Studies. The curriculum provides students with an engaging and thorough education in Latin American and Border issues, relating regional issues to larger hemispheric phenomena. The program thus has many opportunities for students to develop their own interests and skills.

Congratulations to Dr. Josiah Heyman for being named the 2025 R&I Outstanding Researcher – Distinguished Career recipient. This prestigious award honors exceptional careers in research, scholarship, or creative endeavors, and Dr. Heyman's remarkable contributions to the field of anthropology have rightfully earned him this recognition!

Dr. Silvia Torezani, Associate Professor of Instruction, with graduate students had a fantastic time at the February luncheon sponsored by the El Paso Central Business Association (CBA) and hearing from guest speaker, Mayor Renard Johnson. Go Miners!

Horacio Estavillo successfully defended his MA thesis in Latin American and Border Studies (LABS). The title of his thesis, Perspectivas de Liderazgo en la Frontera: Un Análisis de las Experiencias de los Presidentes y Cónsules de El Paso y Ciudad Juárez. Go Miners!

Luis Jesús Quiñones, a student at UTEP and a member of the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies, presented at the Oculto Film Festival at various locations across the border region of Baja California in interdisciplinary events that integrated film with other fields.
