Butler Community College Life Enrichment

Enrich your tomorrow by being involved in the life of your community college. Meetings are open to everyone and there is no charge to attend.

Enjoy programs monthly during the school year as part of Life Enrichment, an educational, entertaining, and cultural program tailored to today’s busy lifestyles. Life Enrichment is for area adults and meets the first Tuesday of every month in conjunction with the school year. Those who attend regularly are encouraged to register so they receive monthly newsletters announcing the programs. Speakers

present on a broad range of topics – from history to modern technology and art to science – and past performers have included singers, storytellers, dancers, and actors.

“I am currently attending Butler Community College to obtain my associate degree in liberal arts. I want to do the BEST Program that is offered here at Butler through Emporia State University, starting in the spring. My plan is to get my bachelor's degree in elementary education. I have always wanted to become a teacher, and teachers play a crucial role in shaping the future. By teaching children at a young age, you are helping to shape the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators. It’s not just about academics; as an elementary school teacher, you play a crucial role in helping children develop social, emotional, and behavioral skills. I love kids, and I am excited for my future career to make a difference in children's lives. I am very excited about my educational goals, and I am excited about finishing strong at Butler Community College in May and then starting strong at Wichita State University in the fall.”

At today's Butler Community College Life Enrichment meeting, Bailey Martin-Rutliff, executive director at the Kansas Oil Museum, spoke about the legacy of oil in Butler County, and Dr. Isaias McCaffery, a retired professor from Independence Community College, spoke about the Osage Indians and their contributions to the Union during the Civil War. Dr. McCaffery's presentation was brought to us by Humanities Kansas.

“I am currently pursuing a degree in computer science. I am very thankful for your support, which has eased the financial burden of my education and allowed me to fully focus on school. After I graduate from Butler, I plan to attend Wichita State University to get my bachelor’s degree in computer science. This degree will allow me a career in programming medical devices. This career is very close to me, as I am a recipient of a medical device and have had the privilege to be on the receiving end of people who program these devices. With a computer engineering/programming degree, I would have the opportunity to program medical devices like the one I have implanted. Knowing how much this device has changed my life, I want to ensure that others like me have the same opportunity that I had. Thank you again for your support so I can make my dreams come true.”

Hubbard Welcome Center on the El Dorado campus of Butler Community College

9 a.m. - Bailey Martin-Rutliff, executive director of the Kansas Oil Museum, will present “Deeper Than Oil: Building Legacy in Butler County.” Her presentation blends personal stories with local history to explore how perseverance, innovation, and community shaped Butler County’s identity. Drawing on true accounts from Kansas’s oil boom, reflections on legacy, and the ongoing work of the Kansas Oil Museum, she invites participants to consider their own histories and the legacies they continue to build.

10 a.m. - Dr. Isaias McCaffrey, history professor at Independence Community College, will present “Last Stand at Rebel Creek: The Osage as Union Allies in Civil War Kansas.” As tensions rose during the Civil War, both the Union and the Confederacy sought to sway the Osage Nation to advance their own interests. Though initially divided, the Osage ultimately became key Union allies, helping thwart an 1863 Confederate expedition aimed at reigniting Southern resistance in the Colorado and New Mexico territories. This presentation examines the Osage Nation’s critical contributions to the Union cause in Kansas.

His presentation is part of Humanities Kansas’s Speakers Bureau and 21st Century Civics, a resource collection encouraging Kansans to engage in community conversations about the history of American democracy and the shared responsibilities of citizenship. 21st Century Civics is supported by “A More Perfect Union: America at 250,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

9 a.m. - Jeff Davidson is bringing his music back to Life Enrichment! His new set is called Life, Love, and Leadership. Life happens, but you do have control of the most important parts of it. Love happens, but you also have control of that, and Leadership is how you have control of your life and love adventures. Live well and enjoy some songs reflecting life, love, and leadership.

10 a.m. - Jennifer Callaway, a local artist, will bring her art and process to Life Enrichment. Callaway was drawn to printmaking as an art student. She has continued to make her own prints since graduating from college and exhibits locally and regionally. “Having grown up in the Flint Hills, I truly appreciate their beauty, colors, wildlife, movement of the wind through the tall grass, and the down-to-earth people who live and work there,” says Callaway. “Through my art, I want to draw attention to the beauty of the hills. I’m drawn to color, pattern, and texture in nature and enjoy incorporating these things in my prints.”

9 - 9:30 a.m. - Kayleigh Hartley, a naturalist at Great Plains Nature Center, will present a program on birds of prey. She will bring an ambassador animal with her.

10 - 10:45 a.m. - Taylor Frank, coach of Butler’s Livestock Judging team, will bring a few of his students to talk about their experiences. Last year’s team earned National Team of the Year honors, with four team members being named All-Americans. This was the sixth time the Butler judging team was named National Team of the Year.

9 a.m. - Dr. Tamara Daniel, Butler’s new president, will welcome our Life Enrichment members.

9:10 a.m. - Judy Bastin, director of libraries and archives at Butler, will share the fall Book Talk books and schedule.

9:15 a.m. - Butler Athletics – Butler’s new athletic director, Mike Helmer, along with Kyle Woodall, Butler’s interim head football coach, and Lisa Lechtenberg, Butler’s head volleyball coach, will share a preview of Butler’s fall sports. (We’ll hear from the soccer coach in October!)

10 - 10:45 a.m. - David Dillner, El Dorado’s city manager, is making September’s Life Enrichment a stop in his Listening Tour. He is visiting with residents to discuss things they would like to see in El Dorado, address questions they may have about projects or events happening in the area and gather ideas about what they would like to see in the community. This is a great time to share your ideas for our community and how we can continue to make it a great place for residents and visitors.

9 - 9:45 a.m. - Miranda Windholz, research and instruction librarian at Butler Libraries, will present “How Reading Helps You Live a Longer and Healthier Life.” Have daily distractions killed your attention span? Do you wish you had a cheap hobby that supports your mental, emotional, and physical health? Do you wish you could read more, but you just can’t find the time? In this presentation, we will explore the science behind how reading benefits your brain and can actually lead to a longer life. We will also discuss simple ways to incorporate reading into your daily life, how setting goals and tracking what you read keeps you motivated, and, of course, the treasure trove of books and other resources that you can find in almost any library.

10 - 10:45 a.m. - Mary Kohn, an associate professor of English and the director of the Chapman Center for Rural Studies at Kansas State University, will present “You Say Tomato, I say Tomahto: Evolution of Language in Kansas.”

We’ve all heard that newscasters are trained to speak with a Midwest accent— the so-called “accent from nowhere.” In fact, language reflects people, history, and community. It is intimately tied to our immigrant past, a foundation that, surprisingly, is always changing. This talk will examine the ways language has changed in Kansas over the past hundred years through the examination of archival and contemporary oral history.

“You Say Tomato, I say Tomahto: Evolution of Language in Kansas” is part of Humanities Kansas’s Speakers Bureau, featuring humanities-based presentations designed to share stories that inspire, spark conversations that inform, and generate insights that strengthen civic engagement.

9 - 9:45 a.m. - John Buass, former Butler professor of English, will discuss PrairyErth, a book about Chase County, Kansas, by William Least Heat-Moon. Public interest in the ideas of place, local culture, and community is very high these days. Because so many people spend more and more time in virtual spaces on the Internet and social media, many people fear we are in danger of losing a sense of what it means to be good neighbors, especially with people whom we may not always agree with. PrairyErth, published in 1991, is a “deep map” of Chase County’s history, geology, flora and fauna, and some of the people who give it and the Flint Hills its character and personality.
10 - 10:45 a.m. - Eric Schminke, a retired forecaster with the National Weather Service, will discuss the Super Outbreak of April 3-4, 1974. The 1974 Super Outbreak was the second-largest tornado outbreak on record for a 24-hour period. It was also the most violent tornado outbreak ever recorded, with 20 violent tornadoes confirmed.

9 - 9:45 a.m. - Brooke Morris, research and instruction librarian at Butler Libraries, will present the history of Chelsea, Kansas, which was the first town settled in Butler County and the first county seat. Learn about its rich history and the County Seat War that followed the founding of this historic Butler County town.

10 - 10:45 a.m. - Spring is one of the most important times for the home gardener. This is the time when we can set ourselves up for success through this growing season. Join Calla Edwards, K-State Research and Extension Horticulture Agent, to learn timely tips to set your yard, garden, and landscape up for success this growing season.

9:45 a.m. – Leroy Burton, Butler County's Silver Haired Legislature representative, will talk about what the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature does and legislation on the docket for this sprint.
