Angie Hurt was recruited to Butler to play volleyball. And at that stage of her life, athletics was her primary focus.⁣
⁣
"I went to college to further my volleyball career and ended up earning a degree along the way."⁣
⁣
Butler was also a practical choice. Staying close to home allowed Hurt to continue her education while managing the financial realities of college and avoiding a significant financial burden for her family.⁣
⁣
Her volleyball coach, Dave Slayton, had a significant impact on her time at Butler. As a team captain, Hurt learned how to communicate, hold people accountable and bring teammates together around a common goal — lessons that have stayed with her throughout her career.⁣
⁣
Today, Hurt is the Founder and CEO of Veracity Consulting, a business and technology consulting firm with over 150 employees. She credits the leadership lessons she learned through athletics with helping shape the way she leads today.⁣

This week's Alumni Spotlight featuring Hillard Cozine '19! 🐻💜⭐

𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬. 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬.⁣
Hillard Cozine | Fourth-Generation Funeral Director | Class of 2019⁣
⁣
Hillard Cozine came to Butler to pursue his dream of playing college football. A late bloomer who had played only one season at his position in high school, he was ready to see what was possible.⁣
⁣
"Butler gave me the opportunity to bet on myself and see where football could take me, and I'm incredibly grateful for that."⁣
⁣
There were plenty of people at Butler who helped him along the way. Andrea Scharenberg taught him accounting principles he still uses daily, Lisa Schmidt was "one of the kindest people" he met at Butler and Coach Steve Braet pushed him to work hard and always wanted the best for his players.⁣
⁣
Today, Cozine is the fourth generation in his family's business, Cozine Memorial Group, where he serves as Funeral Director and Director of Operations. He recently graduated with a master's degree in management from Harvard University.⁣

"I credit Butler with helping me get started on the business track, while also teaching me the work ethic and discipline that have shaped my path ever since."⁣

𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬.⁣ 💜 Junetta Everett | Founder of Butler's First Black Student Union | Associate of Arts | Class of 1975⁣
⁣
As a first-generation college student, Junetta Everett came to Butler looking for a place to begin. She found something more: the confidence to become a lifelong leader.⁣
⁣
A faculty member encouraged Everett to join the debate team, an opportunity she says changed the trajectory of her life by strengthening her confidence, communication skills and critical thinking.⁣
⁣
Everett also founded Butler's first Black Student Union, helping create a greater sense of belonging for students of color. She later spent 33 years with Delta Dental of Kansas while becoming a respected community leader.⁣
⁣
"Butler helped me discover my voice, develop my confidence, and understand the importance of creating opportunities for others," Everett said.⁣
⁣
"Attending Butler Community College was one of the best decisions I've made."⁣
⁣

Butler Community College and the Butler Foundation's offices will be closed Thursday, April 2, for Institutional Development Day, and Friday, April 3, in observance of Good Friday. Have a good holiday weekend!
