Twenty-one years after her CFHI program in Cape Town, alumna Abby Drake returned to the community that shaped her—personally and professionally.

“My CFHI experience made me more humble, more inquisitive, and more holistic in my approach.”

Today, Abby brings the lessons of that experience into every patient interaction, considering how culture, environment, social connection, politics, and other factors influence whole-person well-being. Her return to Cape Town also celebrated the relationships that have endured across decades—including her lasting connection with her host family and the CFHI leadership team in Cape Town, Avril and Marion.

As CFHI enters its 35th year, we’re celebrating the alumni whose curiosity became impact. How has your CFHI experience stayed with you?

Share your story in the comments, tag a fellow CFHI alum, or get in touch with us. We’d love to reconnect and celebrate the lasting impact of this remarkable community.

Not every global health experience begins in a capital city! 🗺️

Meet Matthew Freeman, a recent CFHI alumnus and scholarship recipient who ventured off the beaten path to Tarija, Bolivia 🇧🇴 — a quaint southern city where community connections and local perspectives are part of a student’s daily life.

Participants learn alongside health professionals in community clinics, hospitals, rural outreach settings, and a center specializing in Chagas disease. Homestays and medical Spanish classes offer an even deeper immersion into life in this often-overlooked region.

A CFHI scholarship can do more than make global health education accessible — it can help transform a learner’s purpose into action!

“Participating in this program in Ghana was a deeply transformative experience that bridged the gap between my academic MPH training and the real-world realities of global health.

As a Ghanaian native, everything I witnessed has solidified my urge to work within the Ghanaian health system to design and implement initiatives that genuinely improve lives. This experience didn't just teach me about global health; it made me a better, more conscious public and global health professional ready to give back to my community and the world.”

-Adwoa Ansong (CFHI Practicum Alumnus & Scholarship Recipient, Global Health in Accra, Ghana)

Practicum Alumni Feature: Jazzmyn Hollister (Tarija, Bolivia)

During her CFHI practicum in Tarija, Bolivia, Jazzmyn developed ¡Protégete del Chagas!, a low-cost, movement-based educational game that teaches children about Chagas disease prevention. Her site preceptor, CFHI Medical Director in Tarija, Dr. Karina Gamarra, along with local health professionals and community members, guided the project. After returning to the (name of university), Jazzmyn adapted and piloted the game with students in grades 3-5.

She is now preparing the findings for publication and hopes to further refine the intervention before bringing the completed game back to Tarija.

“My time in Tarija fundamentally shaped how I think about global and community health. I am especially grateful to Dra. Karina for her mentorship, to the local medical and public health staff who welcomed me into their work, and to the residents who trusted me enough to share their experiences and stories with me. They taught me that meaningful health interventions begin with listening to the people who understand their communities best. Seeing an idea that began during my practicum grow into a pilot study has been incredibly meaningful, and I would love to return to Tarija in the future to share the completed game with the community that helped inspire and shape it.”
