People are walking amongst and sharing space with us while suffering from an Invisible Disability (ID) [look it up, it's real]. These people are struggling to keep it together and trying to protect themselves from human cruelty, especially in the workplace that is sure to come their way should they be discovered.
In my work, I teach people in the workplace how to treat people well and use their power for good, particularly those in leadership positions. In education workplaces, there are many people in power positions (i.e. teacher, professor, administrator, president, superintendent, etc.) who are not thinking about how their words, actions, decisions, and denials will trigger a person with an ID. Before you know it, harm happens and now everyone is responding to crisis.
Recently, a friend who works at a community college shared that a student and front desk clerk almost had a physical fight. In a nutshell, here's what happened...
-Student Services office closes at 4:30 pm
-Student arrives for service at 4:23 pm, 7 minutes before closing.
-Clerk says we are closed.
Well, a back and forth, cell phone recordings and eventually escalates to a war between the student and clerk.
The TV show clip shows how a leader [played by Quincy Tyler Bernstine] should respond when engaging with people. The good part is the Anne Hathaway character felt comfortable to tell and the QTB character used her power for good to put the AT character's mind at ease.
Most people are walking while traumatized with an ID. It is critically important that we consider others, watch our words and actions, and use our power for good.
This I know.
