Montessori Education

Founded in 1981, Montessori Family School enrolls students ages three to fourteen on a pair of beautiful Northern California campuses, one in Berkeley, the other in El Cerrito. A full member affiliate of the American Montessori Society, MFS prepares students for life through a stimulating, holistic school experience. Congratulations, EBM Graduates! 🎓 Many of 8th year graduates have been with us since preschool or kindergarten - there were definitely tears in the building as we sent them off. We know these amazing human beings will be pillars to our community and have a future filled with success. 🎉 We could not be more proud of our graduates! Congratulations!

🌙✨ Lower Elementary SLEEP OVER at school... The Montessori way, of course!

The 1st-3rd graders (plus EBM siblings) cooked their own dinner, served themselves and cleaned up, set up their own sleeping bags, did the usual nighttime routines, and cozied up for a screening of WALL-E. 🎬

This is Montessori practical life in action.

If you could make up your own island, what would be on it? 🏝️

Our 6th graders' capstone project was to do just that! In three phases, they located their island on the globe, designed a name and map, and filled it with rich ecosystems, histories, and cultures to bring their imaginations to life. Researching, writing, and presenting in a variety of creative mediums made for a truly thoughtful end-of-year project.

Each student brought their own passions into their work, from Kobe Bryant tributes and outer space mysteries, to the breezy fun of Love Island and a country founded entirely on peace. 🌍✨

Spring is in the air, and so is the energy of students finishing the year strong! With just one month left, every classroom is buzzing with the kind of work that makes you stop and smile.

🎭 Kindergarten Bridge brought "The Three Javelinas" to life in the most heartwarming way. A brave, joyful step into acting for our youngest learners.

📚 Lower Elementary is diving into bigger, more collaborative works, and learning how to be good leaders for the incoming 1st levels next fall.

🪨 Upper Elementary explored the rock cycle and started seeing the everyday world through brand-new eyes. It rocked!

🌊 Middle School delivered a spirited production of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" at our weekly community meeting, complete with a bubble-machine-powered storm to sink their ship.

One month to go, here's to finishing strong!

to our INCREDIBLE spring concert that rocked out last Friday! We started with late night dreams, saw Rabbit and Opossum rescue the moon, and finished with incredible vibes from the middle school.

The full video recordings and photos will be available to students' parents shortly for your enjoyment. A big shoutout to Bryan Zeitler for his amazing camera and amazing camerawork!

And the BIGGEST shoutout to the magical, musical Micah McClain! Thank you for your love, joy, and patience while helping each child shine in their own way on stage!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day! 🍎

This Teacher Week we want to take a moment to say thank you to all of our incredible, thoughtful staff supporting the work of our students day after day! Props on props for coming early, staying late, and giving their absolute best!

And we also want to take a moment to thank all of the wonderful teachers who taught us to be the best teachers we can be! And we want to thank all of the teachers who taught them!! And their teachers too... well, you get the point.

Incredible Lower Elementary field trip this past Tuesday to the AMAZING California Academy of Sciences! 🔬🐠🦋

For many kiddos, BARTing in to San Francisco and navigating the Muni and busses was a big highlight! And of course, once we arrived, we had incredible experiences all around the museum! Many kiddos cited that their favorite parts of the day were the trip there, the rainforest dome, the aquarium divers, and the gemstone room (sorry, it was pretty crowded in that area and we didn't get great pics 🥲).

Would definitely be a fun trip idea to go back and have them tour guide for your family! Here's to science-y fun!

Over 100 years ago, Maria Montessori researched and studied what the most effective strategies were for guiding and supporting child development and growth. Today, emerging discoveries in modern neuroscience are proving her right!
