🥵 As the temperature rises and varying climate around the world, we have some tips on staying cool and safe during these hot summer months.
Stay Balanced During Heat Waves and Recover Afterwards:
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, heat waves can deplete the body’s Qi and Yin, disturb the Heart and Shen (spirit), and lead to symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, dehydration, nervous system overdrive, and poor sleep. To remain balanced during periods of excessive heat, it is essential to protect body fluids, clear internal heat, and support the Liver, Spleen and Stomach.
During heat waves, prioritize adequate hydration with room-temperature fluids, and incorporate foods that nourish Yin and clear heat, such as watermelon, cucumber, mung beans (or mung bean soup), and leafy greens. Avoid excessive consumption of iced products, greasy, spicy, or fried foods, as these can generate more internal heat and further tax digestion.
Gentle movement practices such as qigong or taiji, performed during cooler parts of the day, can help maintain the smooth flow of Qi without overexertion.
After a heat wave, the body often presents signs of Qi and fluid deficiency, such as residue tiredness and fatigueness.
Recovery should focus on replenishing fluids, restoring energy, and harmonizing the internal organs. Light, easily digestible meals such as congee, soups, and steamed vegetables are beneficial. Ingredients like lotus root, pear, and all kinds of mushrooms can help rehydrate and nourish Yin. Adequate rest, early sleep, and calming practices are also important to restore the Heart and Shen and restoring the nervous system.
By aligning daily habits with the rhythms of the environment, TCM emphasizes prevention, balance, and gradual recovery—helping the body remain resilient through periods of extreme heat.
Stay safe out there, WWS community!
