This week, educators from across the county came together for Day 1 of Learning How English Works (LHEW) through the California Reading and Literature Project.

Participants explored the history of English learner education in California, engaged in rich discussions about language and policy shifts, and collaborated around strategies to help students expand and amplify their academic language in the classroom.

Through hands-on routines, text analysis, and collaborative learning, teachers worked together to deepen their understanding of the California ELD Standards and how to make language visible in instruction across content areas.

We appreciate the dedication of these educators who continue investing their time to strengthen learning opportunities for multilingual students across Imperial County.

Heber celebrates Mrs. Newton!

Big news from Heber!
Please join us in congratulating Gabby Newton, one of our incredible teachers, for receiving the John Shefelbine Leadership in Literacy Award!

This prestigious award, presented by the California Reading & Literature Project, honors educators who demonstrate exceptional leadership in literacy instruction. It’s named after Dr. John Shefelbine, a visionary educator and researcher who devoted his life to helping all students, especially English learners, become confident and capable readers.

Gabby’s recognition is a reflection of her passion, dedication, and impact in the classroom. Her work ensures that Heber students not only learn to read, but grow into thoughtful, lifelong learners.

We’re so proud of you!
