I came home to some new gopher mounds. This gopher picked the wrong property to move onto.
It's a rare occurrence, but it does happen. Your Gopher X was working fine but now it just won't start. Our machines are not always sold to people that have a thorough knowledge of small engines. So here's a few basic tips to get you up and running without taking it in for a repair:
1 - Does it have gasoline in it? If not, then that's probably why it won't start.
2 - Did the machine get knocked over? If so, you may have gotten oil into the cylinder, that leaked into the carburetor and then into the air filter. A few simple steps and you'll be back to killing gophers, moles, prairie dogs and ground squirrels!!
2a - Step 1 - Remove the air filter. If there is oil around the base of the housing then it is soaked with oil. Clean the filters with soapy water and let them dry. While it's drying, try and start the engine. If it starts then great. Once the filters are dry, you'll be up and running again. If the pull cord won't pull then you have oil in the cylinder. If it does pull but still won't start, try the next step.
2b - Step 2 - Remove the spark plug and then remove the oil from the cylinder. Use a deep socket to remove the spark plug (5/8" or 13/16" depending on your model engine). If there is oil in the cylinder you will need to remove most of it. Turn off the fuel on the engine, cover the spark plug hole with a towel and pull the cord. You should be able to get most of the oil out this way. Be careful not to get anything stuck in the cylinder. Once the oil is all out, put the spark plug back, and try and fire the engine up again. If it starts, you're all set. If it doesn't then you may still have some oil in the cylinder or there is oil in the carburetor.
2c - Step 3 - Remove oil from the carburetor. The carburetor is located below the air filter. It has a drain plug that comes either straight out or is angled out. It is not the screw that points straight up. Turn off the fuel, get something to catch the oil/fuel, and unscrew the carburetor drain plug. After all the oil/fuel drains out, replace the plug. Your machine should start now. If not, then you should take it for service.
3 - Is there oil in it? There is an oil sensor on the machine. If there is not enough oil, the machine will not start. While the machine is level, take out the dipstick (there is one on the front and another in the back, either is fine), wipe off the dipstick, dip it back it and then see where the oil level is. If the machine is leaking oil you should take it in for service. If you know why it leaked oil and you had a d'oh moment, just add more oil. The reservoir should hold about 1 pint of motor oil in total.
If none of those work please feel free to message, email or call us. We don't care how old your machine is, we're here to help!!

If you only have one gopher then this trick may work for you. Somehow this guy traps a gopher in a gallon milk jug. But when you're done with trying out gimmicks go and rent or buy the Gopher X! Got Smoke?

How to Prepare Your Yard for Killing Gophers
The Gopher X is our preferred method of killing gophers, but this is how you should prepare your yard even if you want to use traps or poisons or any other method. You especially want to follow these rules if you are going to rent our machine from one of our rental partners. It will save you tons of time and money!!
24 hours before you start treatments, do the following:
Step 1 - Flatten all mounds new and old. I prefer to use a solid metal rake. The rake marks really help to differentiate the old mounds from the new mounds the following day, and it also helps to blend the damage into the existing landscape.
Step 2 - Smash any tunnels you can find. For me, using the heel of my boot works just fine.
SIDE NOTE - If you can till your land, that’s the best approach and you can avoid steps 1 and 2. By systematically using a tiller the process is more thorough and you'll be less likely to miss any mounds or tunnels. Obviously, if you have grass throughout most of the treatment area tilling may not be a good choice.
Step 3 - Use a sprinkler and water the area that you are going to treat. It helps to stabilize the dirt so that any new tunnels are going to be solid and easy to treat. This is especially helpful with sandy soils or clay soils where the ground breaks apart easily.
I hope that this guide is helpful for anyone who's forced to go into battle with these destructive rodents.
Also, we're looking to partner with more rental companies throughout the US. If your local rental company does not offer our machine yet please have them contact us, or share their contact information with us via the comments section below or by sending us a message.

"I've used the Gopher X machine on 6 different customer’s yards and horse pastures for treating Mole issues.
The 6 yards, 3 consisting of sandy soil, and 3 horse pastures, have been entirely successful when reinspecting a follow up service.
Using the Biodegradable Castor & Mineral Oil to line the Mole tunnels around school baseball fields has worked well.
This machine works wonderful around tree roots and along sidewalk edges where Mole traps cannot be used."
