🔍 JKW CHALLENGE: THE HIDDEN ENGINEER! 🛠️

This weekend, we’re challenging our young engineers to look at everyday objects a little differently!

The challenge: Build a tool or gadget that solves a problem, helps you explore something new, or simply makes life more fun.

No special supplies needed — grab some cardboard, tape, cups, string, rubber bands, bottles, or whatever you have around the house and see what you can invent! 💡

Parents, we’d love to see what your kids come up with! 📸 Post a photo, tag JKW Innovations, and use so we can see what you built!

Be creative. Be curious. Be you. ⭐

What’s one of the easiest ways to remember 7 × 8?

Try this:

5, 6, 7, 8 → 56 = 7 × 8.

Our students worked on multiplication facts today in Math Help! & Games, and sometimes a memorable little pattern can make all the difference.

The goal isn’t simply to tell students to memorize an answer. We want to give them different strategies they can use when a fact doesn’t immediately come to mind.

Little connections like this can help students become faster, more confident, and a little less intimidated when they run into a tricky multiplication problem.

And this picture may be one of our favorite examples of “thinking hard about math.” 😂

Electricity makes a lot more sense when you can actually build the circuit yourself. ⚡

On Tuesday, our 1st–5th grade Learning Electronics students worked with Snap Circuits to explore how electrical circuits work.

Students followed circuit diagrams, identified the components they needed, connected batteries and switches, and then tested their work.

When everything was connected correctly, they could immediately see the result—lights illuminated and components began moving.

That instant cause-and-effect is one of the reasons hands-on electronics can be such a great learning tool. Instead of only hearing that electricity needs a complete path, students can build that path, control it with a switch, and watch what happens.

That’s the kind of learning we love seeing at JKW. ⚡💡

One challenge doesn’t have to produce one answer. 🃏

These students were all given the same basic materials for a card tower challenge in Creative Design & Engineering—but take a look at what they created.

Each student approached the problem differently.

That is one of the things we want students to experience through engineering: sometimes there isn't a set of instructions showing you exactly what the finished project should look like. You have a goal, some constraints, and the opportunity to figure out your own way to solve it.

Same materials. Same challenge. Completely different ideas.

And we think that makes this picture even better. 🙌

Today’s LEGO Engineering lesson started with something simple: a wheel and an axle. ⚙️

Students explored how this simple machine helps create movement and then put the idea to work in their own LEGO builds.

The fun part was seeing how differently everyone used the same concept. Some builds stayed small, others grew into larger vehicles, and plenty changed along the way.

Same lesson. Completely different creations.

Saturday means it’s time for another JKW Challenge! ⚙️💥

This week: The One-Touch Chain Reaction!

The challenge is simple:

Build a chain reaction with at least 3 steps, start the entire thing with ONE touch, and then keep your hands off to see if your creation can finish the job on its own!

Dominoes can fall.
Balls can roll.
Cars can crash.
Cups can topple.
And one action can trigger the next.

⭐ Bonus: See if you can create a chain reaction with 5 or more steps!

Use cups, blocks, LEGO, cardboard, balls, toy cars, recycled materials — whatever you have available.

And if it doesn’t work the first time? Even better. Troubleshoot it, change something, and try again. That’s where a lot of the learning happens.

One of our favorite things to see at JKW is the moment a student realizes, “I did it.”

That moment can look completely different from one child to the next.

It might be completing a physical challenge, turning an idea into a finished creation, finally knocking down a target, proudly showing off a project, experimenting with something unfamiliar, or learning alongside a room full of other students.

The project itself matters — but so does everything students practice while getting there:

Persistence. Creativity. Problem-solving. Confidence. Curiosity.

We want students to leave class having done more than simply complete an assignment.

We want them to leave thinking, “I made that. I figured that out. I can try the next thing too.”

That’s a pretty good way to end another week at JKW Innovations. 💙🧡

A robot starts as a collection of parts. What students do with those parts is where the learning begins. 🤖

In Robotics & Automation at JKW Innovations, students explore how motors, wheels, sensors, wiring, gears, and structural components can work together to create a functioning machine.

They’re not simply assembling something to look at.

They’re making decisions about how it should be built, connecting different systems, experimenting with their designs, and then seeing whether their ideas work in the real world.

It’s a hands-on introduction to robotics, engineering, and how individual components can become one working system.

We currently have spots available for homeschool students in:

Learning doesn’t always happen sitting at a desk. 🙌

At JKW Innovations, one class might have students working on movement, coordination, and physical challenges, while another has them measuring, mixing, experimenting, and getting their hands a little messy. 🧪

That variety is intentional.

We want students to have opportunities to move, experiment, create, problem-solve, and learn by doing.

Some lessons are active. Some are messy. Some require trial and error. And sometimes the best learning happens when students are so engaged in what they’re doing that it doesn’t feel much like a traditional lesson at all.

That’s what hands-on enrichment looks like at JKW. 💙🧡
