We’re excited to shine the spotlight on our Southside Middle School Chorus Program and welcome our new Chorus Director, Ms. Ashlee Poole! 🎤🎼

Under Ms. Poole’s direction, our Cubs are developing their voices, building confidence, learning the power of teamwork, and discovering the joy that comes from making music together. We can’t wait to hear how this talented group grows throughout the year!

🎨 From Fundamentals to Mastery: Art in Action at Southside! 🖌️

Our talented Cub artists are exploring value and form, two essential elements of art, while building their skills from year to year!

✏️ 6th Grade: Students begin their middle school art journey by learning to create value and form using graphite and a variety of drawing pencils. Their traditional still lifes feature familiar objects such as fruit and vases as they develop foundational drawing and shading techniques.

🖊️ 7th Grade Academy: Students take their skills a step further by creating value through mark-making with ink, using small dots and lines to develop depth and dimension. Their still lifes feature student-selected objects that represent who they are, adding a personal touch to their artwork.

🎨 8th Grade Academy: Our eighth-grade artists bring it all together! Using colored pencil, ink, and graphite, students create multimedia still lifes that demonstrate a mastery of the skills they have developed throughout middle school and a true understanding of value.

We love seeing our Cubs grow as artists from learning the fundamentals to creating pieces that showcase their individual voices and talents! 💙💛

🎨🎭🎶 Fine Arts Academy Parent Night was a wonderful success! 🎶🎭🎨

We loved welcoming our Fine Arts families to Southside for an evening of connection, information, and celebration of the incredible opportunities available to our young artists! 🩵💛

From music and theatre to dance, visual arts, and more, our Fine Arts Academy continues to provide students with opportunities to discover their talents, develop their creativity, and SHINE! 🌟

A special thank you to our Fine Arts teachers and staff for their dedication to our students, and to all of the families who joined us. Your support makes a tremendous difference!

🎶 Music Theory in Action! 🎼

Students are putting their music knowledge to the test in 7th/8th Grade Beginning Band! 🎺🎵

Students are reviewing note names in their assigned clefs, treble or bass, through a fun music theory activity. Each worksheet features a story with missing words represented by notes on a musical staff. Students must correctly identify and decode the notes to complete the story! 🧩🎶

What a creative way to strengthen note-reading skills while making music theory engaging and meaningful! 🩵💛

👏 Congratulations, Ms. Voss!

Florence 1 Schools teacher Robin Voss has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Palmetto State Teachers Association Classroom Grant. This is the fifth year of the PSTA Classroom Grants created as part of the Reinvesting in Our Members Program.

Ms. Voss is a photography teacher at Southside Middle School. The grant will purchase a Miops Smart Trigger Intervalometer, an innovative photography tool that will give students hands-on opportunities to explore photography, science, creativity, and technology. According to Ms. Voss, “Students will use the intervalometer to create a variety of unique photographic projects, including time-lapse, water-drop, laser, and sound-activated photography featuring events such as lightning, thunder, and other loud sounds.” The grant will also allow students to take the intervalometer home for several days to document processes that unfold over time. Students may capture a seedling growing, an egg hatching, a candle burning, a porch being built, and countless other everyday events. PSTA Executive Director, Kathy Maness surprised Ms. Voss at her school with the exciting news that her grant was chosen as a winner!

📚🌏 Ancient India Comes to Life in the Classroom!

Mr. Moses’ 6th grade Social Studies students are taking an engaging journey through Ancient India with hands-on learning stations! Students are:

📖 Analyzing the beliefs and practices of Hinduism
✏️ Creating interactive notebook pages about the Indian Caste System
🔢 Exploring India’s contributions to mathematics through place value and problem-solving
🧠 Strengthening critical thinking and writing skills using Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER)
👨‍🏫 Participating in targeted, teacher-led small groups designed to meet their individual learning needs

From history and math to literacy and critical thinking, these Cubs are making connections across the curriculum while staying actively engaged in their learning! 💙💛

ATTENTION 8TH GRADERS: SIGN UP FOR A FREE PSAT BY AUG. 25TH!

The SC Junior Scholars Program identifies and recognizes eighth graders with outstanding academic talent. The program also offers summer opportunities with South Carolina colleges, universities, and the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.

A permission form was sent to the guardian's email address on file with the district on August 18th.
