Erik Satie's Vexations is a single page of music that takes more than eighteen hours to perform. The score features a brief, dissonant motif that Satie instructed be repeated 840 times without pause. The piece remained unperformed for decades until 1963, when composer John Cage organized a relay team of pianists to play it through the night at a New York theater.

The performance is as grueling for the listener as it is for the performer. The monotony and sheer duration of the work often produce strange psychological effects. Some pianists who attempt the piece have reported hallucinations, confusion, and an inability to remember the simple melody they are playing . One soloist is said to have quit after fifteen hours, his mind unable to endure the endless repetition . The piece stands as a landmark of endurance and a testament to Satie's singular, iconoclastic genius. 🎹😵💫
