As a new school year approaches, neurodivergent students may be hearing a lot of messages about what they *should* be doing:
- "Get organized"
- "Pay attention"
- "Don't forget this!"
- "Don't let your grades slip"
- "Try harder"

But what if we started from a place of affirmation instead of correction?

We created this Neurodivergent Affirmations handout as a reminder that neurodivergent students deserve support, understanding, and environments that work with their brains - not against them.

And if you're looking for more practical tools for the school year or managing the demands of everyday life, keep an eye out on our socials as we will be announcing the launch of our online store very soon 👀

☀️Summer Sensory Series ☀️

Once we have a better understanding of our unique sensory profile, our sensory needs, preferences, and sensory triggers we can begin to identify activities and environments that may contribute to sensory overload and dysregulation.

Since there will be times that we cannot avoid sensory challenging environments and situations, it can be helpful to create a sensory safety plan. A sensory safety plan is a blueprint of specific strategies and accommodations to help us manage our unique sensory needs and minimize sensory overwhelm.

Thank you for following along with Empowered Pathways LLC "Summer Sensory Series!" As a gift, please feel free to use the included sensory safety planning which includes an example of a completed plan and a blank template.

Something exciting is taking shape behind the scenes, and we can't wait to share it with you. 💙

We're creating a new online learning platform featuring neurodiversity-affirming, evidence-based educational opportunities for mental health professionals and individuals alike. The platform will include professional development and self-study resources, IDFPR-approved CEUs for Illinois Licensed Professional Counselors (with additional continuing education opportunities for other licensed mental health professionals, as applicable), and so much more.

We're hoping to launch in the next couple of weeks, so stay connected and keep an eye on our page for updates. We can't wait to share what's coming!

☀️ Summer Sensory Series ☀️

Now that we better understand our nervous system and our sensory profiles, let's learn about sensory tools. Sensory tools allow us to meet our sensory seeking needs by intentionally engaging with these soothing senses for purposes of calming, regulating, and staying focused.

We've included a few sensory tools below, but we'd love to hear from you - which tools do you find helpful? Please share in the comments below.

Stay tuned because in our next post we will be discussing Sensory Safety Planning and will be sharing a FREE Sensory Safety Planning Template!

☀️ Summer Sensory Series ☀️

A question Alyssa is asked in almost every neurodiversity training is some version of - "What do you do if your sensory needs are different than your partners/parents/siblings/children/co-workers/friends etc?"

This is a super important question because as we've already learned, everyone has their own unique sensory profile which so it makes total sense that sensory clashes will be inevitable!

What is a sensory clash? A sensory clash occurs when two or more people in the same shared space have opposing sensory needs, causing conflict or discomfort. For example, if one person needs complete silence to focus but another needs music or the TV on in the background this can result in a sensory clash.

So, how do we navigate these differences and potential clashes? Checkout the handouts below for 6 practical, proactive tips to prevent sensory clashes and create sensory inclusive environments.

And keep following along on our socials as we start to wrap-up our Summer Sensory Series with practical strategies and tools to practice sensory regulation 👀

☀️ Summer Sensory Series ☀️

Now that we've learned all about our 8 senses, let's dive into cultivating a sensory lens. I'm sure you're wondering - "what is a sensory lens" and "why is it important?"

Our sensory lens is our way of seeing and understanding the world through the filter of our sensory experiences. It helps us bring awareness to the profound influence of sensory inputs on our emotions, thoughts, and overall well-being.

A sensory lens can help us identify sensory triggers and environments that cause stress, fatigue, and sensory overload; recognize our common reactions and behaviors to overstimulating environments; and is the first step to understanding and creating accommodations and sensory safety.

It may sound simple, but understanding our sensory lens can be difficult due to factors like interoceptive challenges, alexithymia (e.g. difficulty experiencing, identifying, understanding, and describing one's own feelings), masking (e.g. concealing your true identity, emotions, or traits, to blend in, avoid judgment, or meet societal expectations), and lack of mindfulness.

That's why it can be important to engage in intentional practice to better understand our sensory lens and needs in order to create sensory regulation and safety (more on this later!). You'll find some more information and simple strategies for cultivating a sensory lens in the graphics below.

Let us know in the comments - what practices have you tried out to get a better understanding of your sensory lens?

Please keep following along, sharing, liking, and commenting as we continue to wrap up our sensory series with practical strategies for sensory regulation. Up next... Navigating clashing sensory needs 💥

☀️ Summer Sensory Series ☀️

Interoception is our ability to notice and understand signals from inside our bodies—like hunger, thirst, needing the restroom, feeling tired, or recognizing emotions.

Some people may have difficulty noticing these signals, while others may feel them very intensely. Challenges with interoception can impact daily routines, self-regulation, and overall well-being.

Interoception Under-Responsive: High pain tolerance, not noticing or seeking care for injuries or illness until severe; not remembering to eat, drink, or continuing to eat until painfully full; struggling to understand and communicate what they are feeling; waiting to go to the restroom until it's an emergency. Helpful strategies include utilizing external routines and schedules; focusing on concrete physical sensations and practicing body scans; linking routines to transitions.

Interoception Over-Responsive: Heightened anxiety and frequent panic attacks from minor bodily fluctuations; easily distracted and preoccupied by internal stimuli; mistaking everyday bodily sensations (e.g. hunger) for severe illness or pain; frequently fearing nauseous or generally unwell; frequent bathroom use; avoiding activities that bring attention to internal states (e.g. vigorous exercise). Helpful strategies include neutral language and descriptors; building more predictable environments and routines; and considering occupational therapy.

💭 What are some examples of your hypersensitive/hyposensitive interoception at work? Have you found any helpful strategies? Share in the comments!

Now that we know all about our nervous system and our sensory profile, we'll be wrapping up our with practical tools and strategies to support your unique sensory needs. Stay tuned! 👀

☀️ Summer Sensory Series ☀️

Now that you've learned all about vestibular, let's chat about proprioception - our sense of where our body is in space and helps with coordination. These receptors are located in muscles and joints of the body and helps us to create smooth movement and apply the right amount of pressure.

Proprioception Under-Responders (sensory seeking): You may struggle to know how much pressure to apply, may lack safety awareness, and be prone to accidents. It can be helpful to engage in safe climbing, physical contact games/activities, receive deep pressure massages and hugs, and enjoy push/pull/lift activities and chores.

Proprioception Over-Responders (sensory aversive): You may avoid physical contact, appear timid around others, avoid physical play, and feel anxious in crowded spaces or when standing close to others. You value your personal space, benefit from healthy body boundaries, being talked through movement and what to expect, and may benefit from intentional pressure - such as pressure clothing and weighted vests.

Do you think you're a proprioception under- or over-responder? What activities are helpful for you? Share in the comments below!

Stay tuned because our next post is going to wrap-up the three hidden senses by doing a deep dive on interoception 🔎
