Congratulations are in order for our SIUE Higher Education and Student Affairs Program student Dustin Brakebill on Outstanding Graduate Assistant Award ✨

He writes:

I was nominated for the Outstanding Graduate Assistant Award and selected as the award recipient for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Student Affairs Division. I’m deeply humbled for getting this award in my first year as a GA. I want to thank Dave Hagedorn for nominating me.

I also want to thank everyone in Campus Recreation at SIUE for making this experience more then I could think of!

Also thank you to the HEAT/HESA Program for teaching me in the classroom on how to be a better Student Affairs professional and being able to take what I learn in the classroom and use it in my work.

YOU are invited to join the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior on Tuesday, February 11th at 10:00 a.m. in the Abbott Auditorium in Lovejoy Library for “Belonging in Higher Education: The Power of 'Lived' Narratives"

Bring your friends, classmates, colleagues!

Here’s a synopsis of the event:

How do people from diverse backgrounds navigate higher education spaces? What does belonging mean in an era of shifting demographics and institutional/political challenges? And what role does it play in the success of faculty, staff, and students? In this presentation, co-editors (Drs. Nicholas Hartlep, Terrell Strayhorn, and Fred Bonner) explore Belonging in Higher Education, a collection of (auto)ethnographic narratives that reveal the lived experiences of diverse perspectives across various institutional types. Using anecdotes and data from the book, this trio of scholars will unpack the complexities of belonging, identity, and institutional culture highlighting promising practices, policies, and programs that help create more inclusive and empowering environments for all. Join us for a conversation that bridges research and theory; leave ready to put it into practice.
