Thank you Ron Simpson for all you’ve done to get the Alumni Association off the ground! We are looking forward to having EHS alum Dr. Stuart in the role of executive director!

Superintendent Dr. Patrick Shelton has announced that high school principal Dr. Steve Stuart is stepping down from that role, effective immediately, and will assume the position of executive director of the EGHM Foundation.

“During his time at EHS, Dr. Stuart has made a profound impact on the lives of students, staff, and the entire Edwardsville community,” said Shelton. “We are excited that he will continue to contribute to our community in his new role as the executive director of the EGHM Foundation.”

Ron Simpson, executive director of the EGHM Foundation, has announced his retirement and will transition out of that role.

“Serving as principal of Edwardsville High School has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life,” said Stuart. “I truly enjoyed coming to EHS daily and having the pleasure to work with this diverse student body and dedicated staff. I am immensely proud of the achievements we have accomplished as a school, and I am deeply grateful for the support and collaboration of the entire school community, including students, staff, parents, and the school board.”

Stuart served as EHS principal for four years and spent 24 years in administration in District #7.

“This new position will allow me to continue to contribute to the educational community in a broader capacity, supporting initiatives that align with my passion for advancing educational opportunities and community engagement,” said Stuart. “In addition, I will have the opportunity to continue my involvement with District #7 and work to increase the partnership between the District, the Foundation and Alumni Association, and the entire community of District #7.”

EHS associate principal Alex Fox has been appointed interim principal for the 2024-25 school year. Fox served as associate principal at EHS last year, overseeing the Success Academy, after six years as athletics director and four years as an assistant principal at EHS. He has been on the EHS campus for 11 years and is in his 27th year with the district.

“Mr. Fox has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout his tenure,” said Shelton. “His extensive experience and long-standing commitment to EHS make him the ideal person for this position. We are confident that Mr. Fox will provide the stability needed during this time of transition, ensuring that our students and staff continue to thrive.”

Fox began his District #7 career as a fifth-grade teacher at Columbus Elementary and began his administrative career at Liberty Middle School in 2006.

“I am honored to step into the role of interim principal for EHS and continue serving this incredible school community,” said Fox. “I am deeply committed to our students and staff, and the values that make EHS a special place. I will focus on maintaining high standards of education and supporting each member of our school family as we navigate this transition together.”

𝐀𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐰

Herman Shaw likes to “give back.” That’s why he and some fellow Lincoln School Alumni started the historic Lincoln School Alumni Foundation. Lincoln School was the first state-funded free public school for African American children in Edwardsville. Since 1986, the Foundation has generously provided scholarships for deserving students and the funding for a part time home-school liaison for District 7. Annually, they award 20 plus students with $1000 scholarships for continuing their education after high school.

After moving to Edwardsville as a young boy, Shaw began to show his athletic prowess in the area. In 1950 Lincoln School became a part of District 7 and Shaw starred in 4 sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. In 2023 he was inducted into the EHS Sports Hall of Fame.

Upon graduation, Shaw attended Illinois State University for two years and played three sports. He then joined the U.S. Army and served for two years. After serving his country he spent the next ten years doing counseling work at the Alton State Hospital. He was then offered a job with University City High School where he spent 32 years as a Counselor/Assistant Principal. During this time, he completed his degree from Webster University in Psychology and Education.

Shaw and other alumni graduates from Lincoln School decided to form a charitable foundation after a Lincoln School reunion. They wanted to “enhance the educational opportunities of the youth of Edwardsville School District.” With $400 left over, they used it as seed money to get started. The foundation hosted a golf tournament and then a bowling tournament. Since that time, they have given hundreds of thousands of dollars in student scholarships and over $100,000 to District 7 for the school liaison position.

Shaw’s advice is to treat others the way you want to be treated and give back to the education institutions that prepared you for a successful future. His hobbies include fishing, golfing, and working for the historic Lincoln School Foundation. He wants to remind everyone to play in or sponsor the Harry A. Pendleton Golf Scramble which supports the Foundation. The location is Oakbrook Golf course on September 14, 2024. More information can be found at hlsaf.org.

Congratulations to Dylan Brueggeman, first winner of the Gavin Miller Memorial Summer Orchestra Scholarship.
Besides being a member of the Edwardsville High School Symphony Orchestra, Dylan participates in Science Olympiad, Robotics and Peer to Peer Tutoring. He is a straight A student enrolled in Honors classes in Math, Science and Literature.
His Orchestra teacher, Ms. Victoria Voumard commented: Dylan is a bright, talented, and hardworking student. He is extremely deserving of this orchestra scholarship. He not only excels academically at EHS but has played in the EHS auditioned group symphonic orchestra since 9th grade. He is passionate about the cello and enjoys the creative outlet of playing orchestral music.
