Peace in Christ

Today’s Passage: John 16:25–33

Highlighted Verse:

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
— John 16:33

As Jesus nears the end of this final conversation with His disciples, He begins speaking more plainly about where He came from and where He is going. In verse 28, He brings it into one clear statement: He came from the Father, entered the world, and now He is returning to the Father.

The disciples respond by saying that they believe He came from God. Jesus then tells them that the time is coming when they will scatter, but He continues preparing them for what lies ahead.

He tells them that in Him they may have peace, while also speaking plainly about the tribulation they will face in the world.

These are the men who will soon bear witness to Christ and carry His message forward. Their witness will become foundational to the church, and the words Jesus gives them here will matter greatly in the years ahead.

The apostles would face threats, imprisonment, beatings, and persecution as they proclaimed Christ, but none of it could stop the gospel from going forward.

That is why His final words carry so much weight: “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

The world could oppose them, but it could not overcome Christ.

We may not share the apostles’ unique calling or face the same kind of persecution many of them did, but the church still rests in the truth Jesus gave them that night. His words have strengthened believers through suffering and persecution from the earliest days of the church until now.

Our peace is still found in Christ.

Whatever trouble we face, nothing in this world can overturn the victory He has already won.

Let’s pray,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the truth Jesus gave the apostles and for the witness through which the gospel has been carried to us. Help us remain faithful to that truth and keep our peace rooted in Christ. When trouble comes, remind us that nothing can undo what Jesus has accomplished. Give us courage to trust Him and remain faithful wherever You have placed us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What Scripture Had Promised

Today’s Passage: Luke 7:18–35

Highlighted Verse:

“Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.’”
— Luke 7:22

John the Baptist had spent his ministry preparing people for the Coming One, but now from prison he sends two of his disciples to Jesus with a direct question: “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”

Jesus does not simply tell them yes. He points them to what is happening around Him. The blind are seeing, the lame are walking, the lepers are cleansed, the dead are being raised, and the poor are hearing the good news.

Those works were not random signs. They were the very things God had spoken about through the prophets, and Jesus was telling John to look at what Scripture had promised and see it being fulfilled.

That gave John something stronger than an answer built around his own assumptions about how the Messiah’s work should unfold.

It gave him the Word of God and the works of Christ.

After John’s messengers leave, Jesus speaks highly of him and reminds the crowd that John was the messenger sent to prepare the way. Yet not everyone had received John’s message, and many of those same people were now finding reasons to reject Jesus as well.

John came living a strict and separated life, and they said something was wrong with him. Jesus came eating and drinking with people, and they criticized Him for that too.

The problem was not really how John came or how Jesus came.

They had already decided not to receive what God was saying.

That is where this passage reaches us. We can become so sure of our own ideas about how God should work that we begin judging what He is doing by our assumptions instead of by His Word.

John brought his question to Jesus, and Jesus pointed him back to what God had already said.

That is still a good place for us to go when our assumptions do not line up with what Scripture has revealed. We can return to God’s Word, look again at Christ, and let what He has revealed shape what we believe.

Let’s pray,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word and for showing us so clearly who Jesus is. When our own assumptions begin to shape the way we see You, help us return to what You have said. Keep our hearts humble and willing to be corrected, and help us trust Christ for who He truly is. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Waiting on God Alone

Today’s Passage: Psalm 62

Highlighted Verses:

“My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God.
Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah”
— Psalm 62:5–8

There are times when waiting on God is harder than we expected. We may know that He is faithful and believe that He can help, but when the pressure continues or the answer has not come, it can be difficult to simply wait.

Psalm 62 speaks directly into that kind of waiting.

Verses 1–2 and 5–6 are very similar, and that repetition helps us see where the emphasis falls. Again and again, the psalm comes back to waiting for God alone because He is our rock, our salvation, and our refuge.

Waiting on Him does not mean sitting quietly with everything bottled up inside. Verse 8 tells us to trust Him at all times and pour out our hearts before Him. We can bring Him what is troubling us, what we do not understand, and what we wish would change.

When we pour out our hearts to God, we are trusting Him with what is actually weighing on us. We do not have to hide those things in order to wait faithfully.

As the psalm closes, David also warns us about the other places we may be tempted to put our confidence. People, position, money, and whatever else seems secure for the moment cannot give us what God alone can provide. And verse 10 adds that even if riches increase, we should not set our hearts on them either.

So let this psalm remind us today to wait on the Lord alone. As we wait, we can trust Him at all times and pour out our hearts before Him, knowing He is our refuge.

Let’s pray,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being our rock, our salvation, and our refuge. When waiting is difficult, help us keep our hope in You. Teach us to bring our fears, questions, and burdens honestly before You instead of looking somewhere else for security. Remind us that power and mercy belong to You, and help us trust You while we wait. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Safe Place to Run

Today’s Passage:

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.”
- Proverbs 18:10

When something goes wrong, most of us start looking for something that will make us feel secure again. We want an answer, a plan, someone to help, or some way to get the situation back under control.

Today’s verse reminds us where real security is found: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

God’s name speaks of who He is. His faithfulness, strength, mercy, and character do not change when our circumstances do. That is why the righteous run to Him. They are not trusting in a word or a phrase. They are trusting in the Lord Himself.

A strong tower does not mean there is no danger outside. It means there is somewhere secure to go when the danger is real.

That helps us understand the kind of safety this verse is talking about. Trusting the Lord does not mean every problem disappears or every situation turns out the way we hoped. It means that in the middle of whatever we are facing, we have someone faithful and strong enough to trust with our fear, our questions, and the things we cannot control.

And the more we know the Lord, the more natural it becomes to run to Him first instead of waiting until everything else has failed.

There will always be things in life that make us feel uncertain, but our security does not have to rise and fall with our circumstances.

The Lord remains the same.

Whatever we are facing, we can run to Him and rest our confidence in who He is.

Let’s pray,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You are a safe place for us when life feels uncertain. Help us remember to run to You first instead of trying to carry everything on our own. Remind us of Your faithfulness when we are afraid, confused, or unsure of what to do. Help us trust who You are and rest knowing that You remain the same no matter what we are facing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
