The Hope of the Faithful

Today’s Passage
Psalm 16

Highlighted Verse

“You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
Psalm 16:11

Psalm 16 gives us a beautiful picture of a life that has found its rest in the Lord.

We can enjoy the good things He gives us and be thankful for them, but our hope is not built on those things. The Lord is the One we trust, the One who counsels us, and the One we want before us as we walk through life.

There is a steadiness that comes from knowing our lives belong to the Lord. In Him we find the security, contentment, and joy that nothing else can give.

And that hope is not only for this life. Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we know that even death cannot bring it to an end. Jesus was not left in the grave. He rose again, and because He lives, those who belong to Him have a hope that reaches beyond the grave and into the presence of God forever.

Let’s pray,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that our lives belong to You. Teach us to trust You more each day, to keep You before us, and to find our contentment in You. Thank You for the resurrection of Christ and for the hope we have that reaches beyond this life. Thank You that our future is with You, and that in Your presence there is fullness of joy forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

When Hurt Turns to Darkness

Today’s Passage
1 John 2:3–11, 11

Highlighted Verse
“But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”
1 John 2:11

Relationships with other believers are not always easy. We spend enough time together to see one another’s strengths and weaknesses, and there will be times when we disappoint or hurt each other. But the way we respond to our brothers and sisters in Christ matters. Jesus even said that people would know we are His disciples by our love for one another.

John has already told us that knowing Christ should be seen in the way we live. If we say we know Him, His commands should matter to us, and one of those commands is to love one another. That is why John speaks so strongly about hatred toward a brother or sister. He says the one who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, even while claiming to be in the light.

John also warns us about what happens when we continue walking in that darkness. He says we eventually lose sight of where we are going because the darkness has blinded our eyes.

John’s warning gives us good reason to look honestly at our own hearts. If there is hatred toward a brother or sister in Christ, we should not excuse it or allow ourselves to become comfortable with it. It belongs to the darkness, not the light we have been called to walk in. As we walk with Christ in the light, it should change the way we see and treat the people who belong to Him.

Let’s pray,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the love You have shown us through Christ. Help us to look honestly at our own hearts and not make excuses for things that do not belong there. When we have been hurt or disappointed by a brother or sister in Christ, keep us from allowing that hurt to grow into hatred. Help us walk in the light and love one another in a way that reflects Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Walking in the Light

Today’s Passage
1 John 1:1–10

Highlighted Verse
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
1 John 1:7

There are things about ourselves we would rather not see too clearly. It is easier to excuse our sin, justify something we know is wrong, or convince ourselves that it really isn’t that serious. But God is light, and there is no darkness in Him. The closer we walk with Him, the harder it becomes to keep calling darkness something other than what it is.

Walking in the light doesn’t mean we have finally gotten everything right. John makes that clear when he says that if we claim to have no sin, we are only deceiving ourselves. Walking in the light means being honest about our sin instead of pretending it isn’t there.

Instead of covering our sin, defending it, or finding someone else to blame, we can bring it honestly before the Lord. Confession is simply agreeing with God about what He already sees. And when we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

So when God puts His finger on something in our lives, we don’t have to hide from Him. We can confess it, turn from it, and keep walking with Him. There is a great freedom in no longer having to pretend. We can take our sin seriously without losing hope, because our confidence isn’t in how well we have done. Our confidence and hope are in Christ and what He has done for us.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that through Jesus Christ we can have fellowship with You. Forgive us for the times we excuse our sin, defend it, or try to hide what You have shown us. Help us to walk honestly before You, confessing our sin and turning from it. Thank You for the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all sin. Help us to take sin seriously without losing sight of the grace and forgiveness You have given us through Your Son. May our confidence and hope always rest in Christ and what He has done for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dealing with a Divided Heart

Today’s Passage
James 4:1–10

Highlighted Verse
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
James 4:8

The desires of our hearts have a way of revealing what matters most to us. When something becomes important enough, we begin chasing it, thinking about it, and fighting for it. Before long, that desire is no longer simply something we want. It has begun competing for God’s place in our hearts.

These desires don’t stay hidden. They affect way more than just our hearts and schedules. They show up in how we respond to people and create conflict when someone stands between us and what we want. Even our prayers can become shaped by what our hearts are chasing. We become so focused on getting what we want that we either never stop to ask God, or we come to Him asking for the very things we’ve already decided we need. Either way, our prayers reveal whether we are truly seeking God’s will or simply asking Him to give us ours.

This is where the real danger of these desires begins to show. Little by little, our hearts become divided between what we want from this world and our devotion to God. We still want the Lord, but we also want to keep chasing the things that have captured our hearts. James calls this friendship with the world because we are trying to hold on to God while giving our hearts to things that are pulling us away from Him.

Yet right in the middle of such a strong warning are four words filled with hope: “But He gives more grace.” When our hearts have wandered, God’s grace gives us a way back. We don’t have to keep following the desires that have pulled us away. We can submit ourselves to God, resist the devil with the promise that he will flee, and draw near to the Lord knowing that He will draw near to us.

Coming back to God means being honest about the sin that carried us away. We turn from it, grieve over it, and ask Him to cleanse our lives and purify our divided hearts. Genuine repentance brings us to a place of humility, where we stop making excuses and bow before the Lord. And it is there that James gives us this promise: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

Let’s pray.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the grace You give when our hearts wander from You. Help us recognize the desires that begin competing for Your place in our hearts, and forgive us for the times we have allowed them to pull us away from You. Give us the humility to turn from our sin rather than make excuses for it. Help us submit our lives to You, resist the things that draw us away, and stay close to You each day. Purify our hearts and help us live with a devotion that belongs fully to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
