Today was Opening Day for teachers and staff of Metcalfe County Schools. We always start the day with a traditional breakfast prepared by our amazing cafeteria workers.

Today was extra special for some of our employees, including one family celebrating three generations of Hornet teachers and another family celebrating a mother, father, and son teaching at the same school.

Thank you to Hornet senior Madelyn-Grace Wright for delivering our invocation; MCMS 7th-grader Baily Morgan for performing our National Anthem and My Old Kentucky Home; and MCMS 7th-grader Tymber Garrett and MCMS 8th-grader Lucy Blythe for being our guest speakers.

We also want to thank our retired teachers, community leaders, and our amazing vendors for joining us again to help us celebrate the new school year.

One of our Hornets is making Headlines and needs your votes!

So if you're heading to the Kentucky State Fair, stop by the Secretary of State's Office booth and cast your ballot for Heer Patel.

Heer, a 7th-grade student at Metcalfe County Middle Schools, is one of eight finalists for the 2026 "I Voted" Sticker Contest.

The top vote-getter’s design will be printed on stickers and sent to county clerks to provide to voters during the November 2026 general election.

🥛***Please read these updates on student milk options for the new school year from our cafeteria staff!

Good afternoon!
We've got some new milk regulations that we need to pass on to students, adults and staff...

First off, we can now offer whole and 2% unflavored milk to our students at breakfast, lunch and afterschool supper! The packaging goes hand in hand with what most of us have heard over the years, red milk and blue milk. Please talk to your students if you have a preference of which they should take.

Secondly, in this new federal regulation package, preschool will only be allowed unflavored (white) milk at all meal services. It can be whole or 2%, but we wanted to stress that change as we head back to school. Again, it is a federal regulation that we are unable to change.

We are excited to see all of our students on Monday!

Metcalfe County Schools Sets New Record for Summer Meals

EDMONTON, Ky. (August 18, 2026) – Metcalfe County Schools is proud to announce that it served a record number of summer meals to local children for the second straight year.

The district distributed 108,762 meals during its SUN Meals Summer Feeding Program, up more than 1,600 from last summer. The district also handed out more than 8,000 gallons of milk. The program, which ran from June 1 through July 27, provided seven days' worth of breakfast and lunch options for 900 children each week.

“We are grateful to be able to help feed our kids during the summer break,” said Food Service Director Beth Miller. “Our staff has a heart for making sure no child goes hungry, no matter the time of the year. We’re thankful for the parents, guardians, and neighbors who braved the heat and storms to pick up meals. And a huge thank you to the Metcalfe County Public Library for partnering with us to help feed even more children.”

Along with the public library, the district also partnered with local growers who provided farm-fresh vegetables, including squash, cucumbers, cantaloupe, watermelon, and sweet corn. These partnerships allowed the district to feed every child who lives in Metcalfe County, not just students enrolled in the school system.

Superintendent Josh Hurt said, “Our Summer Feeding Program was once again an enormous success. I want to congratulate and thank Ms. Beth Miller and all of our food service staff for going above and beyond to ensure our families had a reliable food source in the summer months. Further, I take great pride in seeing a new record set in terms of meals served. This program is a shining example of our commitment to serving the community."

Metcalfe County was also one of 34 school districts selected to participate in the Kentucky Department of Education's Summer Boost: Reading and Mathematics Program. Free books were handed out to children, and free math resources were made available online.
