CompassionWorks LLC was founded by George Parks, John Jorza and Paul Travis to develop and extend the Harm Reduction approach to addictive behaviors pioneered by Alan Marlatt and his colleagues at the University of Washington over the past 25 years. George Parks is a longtime colleague and collaborator of Alan's who has played a key role in program development, consulting and training for the BASI

CS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) program and for Relapse Prevention Therapy (RPT). BASICS and RPT are evidence-based practices that embody what Alan Marlatt called "Compassionate Pragmatism", that is, these programs "Meet People Where They Are" with acceptance and have been shown in rigorous research to be effective in reducing the harm caused by alcohol or drugs and to promote safety, health and success. BASICS has been adopted by hundreds of colleges and universities with thousands of students benefiting from the program. George Parks has helped hundreds of colleges implement BASICS and trained thousands of college personnel in BASICS and other Brief Motivational Interventions. CompassionWorks educational products and services blend heart and mind to help people overcome addictive behaviors and create a more healthy lifestyle.
