Edgar Degas (1834 to 1917) was a French Impressionist artist known for his paintings and drawings of dancers, musicians, and everyday life. π©°π¨ He loved capturing movement and often sketched people while they practiced, stretched, or performed.π¨
One of his most famous works is βThe Dance Class,β which shows ballerinas practicing together in a bright studio. Degas carefully arranged the figures to make the scene feel natural and full of motion. β¨
His art teaches us that everyday moments can become beautiful works of art when we pay attention to movement, posture, and expression.

π¨β¨ Meet Jean Michel Basquiat! β¨π¨
Jean Michel Basquiat (1960 to 1988) was an American contemporary artist known for his bold colors, expressive lines, and powerful symbols. ππ¨ He began as a street artist in New York City before becoming one of the most influential artists of the 1980s.
π¨ Basquiatβs paintings often include crowns, words, numbers, and energetic shapes layered together in a raw and exciting way. One of his most famous works, βUntitledβ (1982), sold for $110.5 million in 2017, making it one of the most expensive paintings ever sold by an American artist. π₯
His art teaches us that creativity does not have to be perfectly neat. It can be expressive, layered, and full of ideas. Basquiat showed that words, symbols, and color can all work together to tell a story. βοΈβ¨
π¬ If you could add a symbol to represent yourself in a painting, what would it be?

π¨ What is still life, and why do artists practice it? β¨ This is an example of one of our elementary studentsβ still life work. β¨
ποΈ Still life is artwork created by observing and painting or drawing real, inanimate objects like fruit, flowers, or everyday items. π¨
π¨ For this piece, the student set up their own arrangement of objects to observe and then painted what they saw, focusing on shapes, proportions, light, and shadow.
π Practicing still life helps students slow down, see details more clearly, and build foundational skills that carry into every area of art. π
π Still life drawing is especially powerful for developing:
β’ Observation skills
β’ Attention to detail
β’ Shading and value techniques
β’ Patience and focus
β’ Hand-eye coordination
π¨ These are the same skills that help artists improve in portrait drawing, painting, and more advanced artwork over time.
π Still life may seem simple, but it is one of the most important ways artists grow and strengthen their abilities.
π If your kid is ready to build real art skills and grow as an artist, Heart Studios offers group classes, private lessons, virtual art classes, camps, and workshops designed to support their progress every step of the way.
