Join us in November! Artist and OACA instructor Chris Brizzard shares classical techniques he learned through his rigorous training at Studio Incamminati, painting directly from the live model. Whether you are wanting to create finished figure paintings, or are interested in techniques to put into practice at our Open Studio sessions, this short course offers insight into a method that will help you build a strong start every time you step in front of the model. Instruction is in oils.

Join our Portrait and Drapery Open Studio with the portrait model! This Wednesday evening, July 29, 6-9 pm. Paint or draw the full figure, focus on the portrait, or capture the lovely drape of fabric in this uninstructed life drawing session. Oils, acrylics, watercolor, graphite, charcoal, pastel-whatever your medium or artistic experience, you will be right at home in our fun and supportive studio! Easel, tables and chairs, and drawing boards provided.
Bring your own supplies. $20 model fee/$10 for students (cash only please)

Painting with Watercolors with Leslie Lienau, our 3-day workshop with , brought together 18 artists of varying skill levels, from total beginners to experienced watercolorists. From the beginning Leslie put everyone at ease by encouraging us to play as we explored this challenging and rewarding medium. She showed us many beautiful watercolor paintings, discussed the history of watercolor and the nature of the medium, and demonstrated a variety of techniques.

FORM PAINTING: The Open Grisaille, a new short course at OACA, is now enrolling! Instructor will demonstrate the open grisaille, a classical painting technique where thin, transparent or semi-transparent layers of a single color are applied to establish tonal values. Light areas are wiped out, creating the open grisaille, the initial framework that sets up a painting. Starting from a gesture and painting directly from life, artists will practice building figures in a variety of poses.

Hi! My name is Jill, I am the voice behind the posts for OACA. I started at the school as a student in 2016, having never painted. After completing many drawing projects in the Academic Atelier, I began learning oil painting. I never knew I could paint drapery, or glass. But knew! When she told me it was time to start painting I actually told her no thanks 😅. I loved drawing and honestly painting intimidated me. But she knew that the exercises she’d been giving me had laid the foundation, and that I had the tools and skills to transition from drawing to painting. If you or someone you know wants to learn to depict what you see, join the Academic Atelier at OACA. Learn traditional techniques that will build a foundation to create whatever your artist heart desires, in any style, without being held back by drawing troubles!
