FORM PAINTING: The Open Grisaille, a new short course at OACA, is now enrolling! Instructor will demonstrate the open grisaille, a classical painting technique where thin, transparent or semi-transparent layers of a single color are applied to establish tonal values. Light areas are wiped out, creating the open grisaille, the initial framework that sets up a painting. Starting from a gesture and painting directly from life, artists will practice building figures in a variety of poses.
For more details and to enroll, see Linktree in bio. Intermediate to advanced, class size is limited to 10 artists.

Hi! My name is Jill, I am the voice behind the posts for OACA. I started at the school as a student in 2016, having never painted. After completing many drawing projects in the Academic Atelier, I began learning oil painting. I never knew I could paint drapery, or glass. But knew! When she told me it was time to start painting I actually told her no thanks πŸ˜…. I loved drawing and honestly painting intimidated me. But she knew that the exercises she’d been giving me had laid the foundation, and that I had the tools and skills to transition from drawing to painting. If you or someone you know wants to learn to depict what you see, join the Academic Atelier at OACA. Learn traditional techniques that will build a foundation to create whatever your artist heart desires, in any style, without being held back by drawing troubles!
Thursdays, 4-7 pm
Atelier is ongoing and new students can start any time. See Linktree in bio for more info!

Creating representational art is not talent alone-it is a skill that can be learned. Join our Academic Atelier with wildlife artist Hannah Harper and learn how transformed her academic training into her own unique, personal, recognizable style. Through a series of targeted exercises, artists focus on classical techniques that develop skills of observation, and learn methods of applying the medium-beginning with graphite-to create the illusion of three dimensional form. Appropriate for all skill levels, ages 14 and up, and especially beneficial for those who want to master the ability of realistically drawing what they see.

In our Figure and Portrait Atelier with instructor , artists train in a variety of methods to develop their skills at accurately capturing the human figure. Artists work from the flat with Bargue copies, focusing on line, structure and form. Next the model comes in, and artists spend time studying anatomy from life, capturing a variety of gestures and introducing value. These practices, done consistently over time, focusing on observation, and with excellent instruction, greatly improve drawing skills for any artist, particularly those interested in depicting the human portrait or figure.
Atelier is ongoing, and new students may enroll at any time.
Saturdays, 2-5 pm, $205 per 4 week session (includes model fee)
All levels welcome, ages 14 and up.
