Honoring the Men and Women in Law Enforcement

This week is National Police Week, a time to honor the brave men and women in law enforcement who work every day to keep our communities safe. Across Oklahoma and the nation, officers put their lives on the line to protect families, uphold the rule of law, and serve others. They are an essential line of defense in maintaining public safety, and they deserve our full support and gratitude.

National Police Week is an important reminder to thank the officers who work tirelessly to protect our communities. Every day, law enforcement officers make sacrifices to remove violent criminals from our streets, respond in moments of crisis, and help keep Americans safe. Their families make sacrifices as well, often carrying the weight of uncertainty every time their loved one puts on the uniform.

Beyond enforcing the law, officers support seniors, mentor young people, assist during natural disasters, and perform countless acts of service that often go unnoticed. For many officers, protecting innocent lives and serving their communities is more than a job. It is a calling and a way of life.

House Republicans are continuing to advance legislation that supports law enforcement and recognizes the important work officers do every day. This week, the House will consider the Expressing Support for Law Enforcement Officers Resolution, which recognizes the sacrifices officers and their families make every day and shows support for men and women who put on the uniform to protect us. It also pushes back on anti-police rhetoric and soft-on-crime policies that have made our communities less safe. Alongside this resolution and countless other efforts to back the blue, House Republicans are also advancing legislation like the Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act, which would prevent charitable bail organizations from posting bail for violent offenders by classifying bail bonds as insurance products under federal law.

I have also been proud to support law enforcement efforts in Oklahoma’s Fifth District through Community Project Funding, including funding for Guthrie Police Department's 911 Center and Logan County radio modernization project. Investments like these help ensure officers have reliable equipment and resources to respond quickly and safely when emergencies happen. It was also an honor to have Sheriff Damon Devereaux of Logan County as my State of the Union guest this year. I will continue standing with the men and women in uniform and ensuring they have the support they deserve.

One of the greatest strengths of law enforcement is the trust officers build within the communities they serve. During National Police Week, we honor the officers who wear the badge with courage and integrity, and we thank them and their families for their sacrifice, service, and commitment to protecting the American people.

Edmond police officer wins Stand Your Ground immunity as prosecutors weigh appeal
Edmond police officer granted Stand Your Ground immunity in brother’s shooting death. Prosecutors consider appeal as case continues. Learn about the legal battle and potential next steps.

EDMOND, Okla. -An Edmond police officer’s fight for immunity from charges stemming from the shooting death of her brother continues. Even though a judge reversed her own decision now granting the officer immunity.
Despite the judge’s order allowing Lieutenant Jennifer Haddock immunity, the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office could appeal the decision and take the case to trial.

A little over a year ago Haddock and her defense team went to court fighting for immunity under the state’s Stand Your Ground law. Prosecutors charged the Edmond police officer with manslaughter for the August 2023 shooting death of her brother Sean Haddock.

Haddock testified she was off-duty and went to her mother’s Edmond home, where her brother occasionally lived. Police said an argument over furniture broke out between Haddock and her brother while their mother was moving. Haddock told the court she shot her brother fearing he was going to attack her. The judge denied Haddock immunity after hearing two days of testimony.

The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals reversed the judge’s decision last week ordering her to re-review the case. The judge issued a six-page order on Wednesday granting Haddock immunity, saying, “the evidence did not show that the Defendant intentionally provoked the victim to use or attempt to use unlawful physical or deadly force.”

Haddock’s attorney Patrick Quillian said in a statement issued on Thursday, “We are pleased the court has granted Ms. Haddock immunity but reserve further comment at this time, as we are awaiting the state’s decision whether to appeal or not.”

The Oklahoma County DA’s office said it was reviewing the judge’s order and has not made a decision on Haddock’s case.

The officer remains on paid leave from the City of Edmond.
