When people think about education, they often picture classrooms, teachers, and students.

However, one of the most meaningful parts of my work has been something I didn't expect: helping adults better understand education. 💡

Families make important decisions every day—about reading, child development, learning environments, and the kinds of experiences they want for their children. Those decisions shouldn't have to be based on guesswork or conflicting advice.

What does it mean for a child to feel seen at school?

It's more than seeing a character who looks like them in a book—although that matters. It's also about feeling that their ideas, experiences, questions, and perspectives have a place in the learning community.

At Brown Institute, identity development is one of the principles that guides our work because we believe education should help children understand themselves while also learning about the world around them.

When children have opportunities to explore their own identities AND appreciate the experiences of others, they're developing skills that extend far beyond academics: empathy, confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging.

Those aren't "extra" lessons. They're part of preparing children to become thoughtful learners, engaged community members, and compassionate leaders.

This is one of the beliefs that shapes everything we do at Brown Institute.

Hearing your child say, "I hate reading," can feel discouraging—but it doesn't have to be the end of the story.

A love of reading doesn't usually grow from pressure. It grows from positive experiences, meaningful choices, and opportunities to see reading as something enjoyable.

Here are four strategies you can try:
📚 Stop making reading feel like a test.
📖 Give your child choices in what they read.
👀 Let them catch you reading.
❤️ Connect books to the things they already love.

Remember: the goal isn't just raising children who can read. It's helping them become children who want to read.
