Children need to develop word recognition and language comprehension.

🔤 Word recognition: Understanding how sounds and letters work together, applying spelling patterns, and learning to read words accurately and automatically.

💬 Language comprehension: Building vocabulary, background knowledge, and the ability to understand, discuss, and think about what they hear and read.

These skills work together. As children become more fluent readers, they can devote more attention to understanding the text. And as they move through school, they'll increasingly rely on reading to learn about other content areas and the world around them.

A strong literacy foundation helps children do more than read words on a page. It helps them access information, develop knowledge, and become independent learners.

Just because your child can read independently doesn't mean you have to stop reading to them.

Read-alouds continue to give children opportunities to build vocabulary, develop background knowledge, strengthen comprehension, experience more complex language and texts, and simply enjoy books.

Independent reading and read-alouds serve different purposes, and there is value in both.

So if you've been wondering whether your “big kid” still benefits from being read to, the answer is YES.

What does a literacy session with Brown Institute actually look like? 📚

Our sessions are intentional, skill-focused, and based on what your child actually needs.

We start by assessing where your child is, then use that information to plan targeted instruction.

From there, we warm up, introduce the skill, model it, practice together, and end by checking for understanding.

And yes, sometimes that practice looks like a game! 🎲 Because structured literacy instruction and joyful learning can absolutely go together.

The goal isn't simply to spend time reading. It's to help your child build the specific skills they need to become a more confident, independent reader.

📚 Banned Books Week is October 4–10!

This year’s theme is “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read.”

If you're local to Edison, the Edison Public Library is celebrating with a Banned Books Week Scavenger Hunt on Monday, October 5!

Events like this are a great opportunity to explore books that have been challenged or banned, learn more about why they have been challenged, and have thoughtful conversations about the topics and ideas found in them.

As parents and educators, these conversations can give us an opportunity to think about:

📖 What topics are children encountering in books?
💭 Why might someone challenge a particular book?
🗣️ How can we talk with children about difficult or complicated topics?
🔎 How can we help children think critically about what they read?

You don't have to agree with every book or every idea in a book to have a thoughtful conversation about it. Reading can be an opportunity to ask questions, consider different perspectives, and learn more about ourselves and others.

And that's something worth making space for, both for ourselves and for our children.

When you're talking with your child's teacher, ask questions that help you understand how your child approaches reading, what they're doing well, where they're growing, and how you can support them at home.

And remember, you don't have to know all the literacy terminology to have a meaningful conversation with your child's teacher. You just need to ask good questions. 💜

This is one reason explicit and systematic literacy instruction matters. Children need to be taught how sounds and letters work together, how spelling patterns work, and how to use that knowledge to decode unfamiliar words.

The goal isn't to have children memorize every word they encounter.

It's to help them understand the code well enough to use it independently. 🔐📚

📚 Book recommendation for upper elementary + middle grade readers!

If you want your child to encounter richer vocabulary, interesting expressions, and clever wordplay without it feeling like a vocabulary lesson, add A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket to the list.

One of my favorite things about this series is the way Snicket plays with language. He introduces words and phrases that may be unfamiliar to young readers and often pauses to explain what they mean.

It’s a great opportunity for children to:
✨ Build vocabulary in context
✨ Notice how authors use language
✨ Explore idioms and expressions
✨ See how knowledge and problem-solving can be powerful

And once you finish reading, you can watch the movie or Netflix series and have fun comparing the adaptations. What changed? What stayed the same? Which version do you prefer?

Parent note: This series includes loss, danger, and some darker themes. If your child is sensitive to those topics (although the Baudelaire children do prevail!), you may want to preview the books before recommending them.
