The 2026 Southwest Texas ACP Regional Resident Meeting, hosted by the UTRGV-VBMC Internal Medicine Residency and chaired by Dr. Carlos Ramos, associate program director and associate professor of internal medicine, brought together residents from training programs across South and Central Texas.

The meeting featured grand rounds by Dr. Laura Garcia, program director and associate professor of internal medicine, on artificial intelligence in internal medicine, followed by resident presentations in clinical vignettes, research and quality improvement.

Residents from both the UTRGV-HCA and UTRGV-VBMC Internal Medicine Residencies were selected to present.

Congratulations to Dr. Diana Diaz, Dr. Somar Mansour, Dr. Luis Salcedo, Dr. Christina Kuon Yeng and Dr. Saba Irfan for representing UTRGV and showcasing the scholarly work of our residents on a regional stage.

As the only Rio Grande Valley institution represented at this year’s meeting, UTRGV demonstrated the strength of its residency programs and continued commitment to scholarship, evidence-based medicine and leadership in Texas.

Throughout September, we’re celebrating Women in Medicine and Science Month by spotlighting women faculty members who are advancing academic medicine, research and education.

Meet Dr. Candace Robledo, director of UTRGV’s Maternal Health Research Center and associate professor of medicine at the UTRGV School of Medicine.

Her journey into public health and epidemiology was shaped by an early love of science and a deep commitment to service. Her work brings together scientific curiosity and a passion for improving the health of communities across the Rio Grande Valley.

At the UTRGV School of Medicine, Dr. Robledo is inspired by the people around her and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through research, education, leadership and community engagement.

More than 100 students received flu vaccines during a recent vaccination event hosted by the UTRGV School of Medicine Office of Student Affairs and UT Health RGV Student and Employee Health.

The event brought together students, faculty, and staff, with UTRGV medical students administering vaccines. Faculty and staff participation was estimated at approximately 50 attendees.

Now in its second year, the event is becoming an annual tradition at the start of flu season, promoting prevention and helping SOM community members stay protected.

UTRGV School of Medicine students are making a difference, both close to home and across the country.

This summer, medical students Siddarth Vyas, Cole Freedman, Catherine Wu, and Andrea Ramos took their medical education beyond the classroom, exploring health policy, research and primary care through experiences in Washington, D.C., and the Rio Grande Valley.

Their paths were different, but each gained a deeper understanding of the factors that shape patient care and the communities they serve.

Their experiences are just a glimpse of the many ways UTRGV School of Medicine students are putting their education into action and preparing to make an impact wherever their careers take them.

UTRGV School of Medicine faculty members Dr. Emilie Prot, clinical associate professor, and Dr. Chelsea Hook Chang, associate professor and chair, were featured speakers at the 2026 Border Health Conference, hosted by the Texas Medical Association Border Health Caucus.

Dr. Prot briefed attendees on Texas Department of State Health Services initiatives affecting border communities, while Dr. Chang discussed building the border health workforce through community-engaged research and academic-community partnerships.

Following the conference, rural and border health leader Dr. Adrian Billings visited UTRGV to meet with Family Medicine residents and faculty about workforce development, physician training and improving access to care in underserved communities.

The UTRGV School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education Office welcomed Deputy Surgeon General of the United States, Rear Admiral Paul Jung, MD, MPH, FACPM, for a special Grand Rounds presentation.

During the presentation, RADM Jung discussed the responsibilities and activities of the Office of the Surgeon General, career opportunities within the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and recommendations for those interested in pursuing careers in public health. The presentation brought together medical students, residents, faculty and staff for an opportunity to learn more about the role of public health in shaping the future of health care.

RADM Jung brings more than 30 years of experience in health policy, health care reform, international health, health professional workforce issues and preventive medicine. Thank you to RADM Jung for sharing his expertise and insights with the UTRGV community and inspiring the next generation of health care professionals to explore careers in public health!

The UTRGV School of Medicine RCMI team made a strong showing at the 2026 RCMI Consortium National Conference in Bethesda, Maryland, with 16 faculty, trainees, staff and collaborators contributing more than 20 poster and oral presentations.

The research spanned basic, translational, clinical and community-engaged research, addressing health priorities including cancer, health disparities and disease prevention. Presentations included ongoing work focused on cervical and liver cancer, among other efforts to advance scientific understanding and improve health outcomes.

The conference also provided opportunities for UTRGV researchers to connect with colleagues from RCMI institutions nationwide, exchange ideas and explore future collaborations. The team's participation reflects the growing breadth and collaborative nature of research at the School of Medicine and its commitment to advancing health outcomes in South Texas and beyond.

UTRGV School of Medicine faculty members Dr. Tara Vierra, Dr. Stanley Fisch and Cynthia Fuentes, NP, recently attended the 33rd Annual Pediatric Conference hosted by Driscoll Health System in Corpus Christi, where they supported medical students participating in the conference's poster competition.

The conference brought together pediatric healthcare professionals from across the region to explore current trends, emerging research and best practices in pediatric care through educational sessions and case discussions.

During the conference, medical student Anthony Dang presented his research poster, "Evaluation of a 16-Year-Old Female with a History of Multi-Generational Trauma and Acute Emotional Stress," providing an opportunity to share his scholarly work and engage with pediatric leaders and physicians.
