🎶🎤UTRGV student José Ángel Fernández recently earned a coveted spot on the new music reality show, Telemundo's Operación Triunfo USA (Operation Triumph USA).

“The opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming one of the great artists in the music industry inspired me to audition,” said Fernández. “Having the chance to gain exposure, grow as an artist and connect with people through my music made this an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

A group of young musicians from across the nation will learn from experts and compete for a chance at a life-changing music career.

Operación Triunfo USA premieres July 7 at 7/6 p.m. CDT on Telemundo and Peacock.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor of Voice Dr. Shayna Isaacs for being named a recipient of the 2026 Collaborative Vocology Outreach Award!

This joint award from The Voice Foundation and the Pan-American Vocology Association is designed to support collaborative outreach projects that promote vocal health and development in communities.

This award will allow Dr. Isaacs and Dr. Mark Tempesta (Assistant Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at University of North Texas) to fund and conduct their study, which will use Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography via the RespTrack system to measure how gender-affirming chest compression garments affect breathing during singing. Upon the conclusion of this project, they will disseminate their research via free outreach presentations in the DFW metroplex and the RGV, through nonprofits specifically dedicated to serving the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Dr. Jones, Assistant Professor of Music Education, has been selected to join the editorial board of the Journal of General Music, a top-tier journal and leading journal for general music. With Dr. Virginia Davis having previously served, Jones’s appointment marks the second time a UTRGV professor has joined the editorial board of this prestigious journal. The UTRGV School of Music faculty and students excel musically and academically!
