The moment I met a legend — and the reason I became Mr. Math.

Yesterday, I had the honor of meeting Edward James Olmos at the South Texas International Film Festival, and he signed this poster for me. But it wasn't just an autograph. He wrote out the quote that changed how I see my own work:

"You're going to be a professional. You're going to do well in life." — from Stand and Deliver

For those who don't know, Stand and Deliver tells the true story of Jaime Escalante — a dedicated math teacher who refused to let his students fail, who pushed them to believe in themselves, and who helped them pass a test the whole world said they couldn't. It's the movie that planted a seed in me years ago. It's the reason I became a tutor, and I show up for my students every single day.

Because here's the thing: math was never just about numbers. It's about belief. It's about a teacher who looks at a student and says, "You can do this," until the student finally believes it too.

Mr. Olmos believed in Escalante's students. Escalante believed in his classroom. And I believe in you.

To every student who's ever doubted themselves: you are not behind. You are not "bad at math." You just haven't been shown your own strength yet — and that's exactly what we're here to do.

A small Tesla coil, a big spark of curiosity. ⚡

One of our students brought his Tesla coil into his tutoring session — and instead of "putting it away," we leaned in. He showed us how it works, we talked through the physics behind it, and that's the whole point: tutoring isn't just about getting through homework. It's a space where your interests get to spark.
