To the šŸ”: Major congrats to the team for their performances this weekend at IBJJF Houston No-Gi International Open. With just a few athletes, 80/20 had established itself as the gym with highest talent density in TX. This is a huge feat as Gracie Barra and Checkmat are large franchise systems. Gracie Barra has over 1,000 schools in its franchise and Checkmat has 200. Pedigo Submission Fighting is an out of state team that has whole documentaries about them. Yet, there we are sticking our nose where we don’t belong. I’ll tell you what, we’re coming for that #1 spot. Everyone lets social media form their opinion about what teams are the best in TX. We got a chip on our shoulder. The data doesn’t lie. Be so good they can’t ignore you.

Major congrats to the team! Getting it done at IBJJF Houston No-Gi! got šŸ„‡ šŸ„‡ in his weight and the open class! ._.bjj also gets it done with šŸ„‡ ! Trevino Bros and with šŸ„‡ and 🄈 battling it out in the finals. And now according to the unofficial jiujitsu.net rankings and ELO algorithm, Leo breaks into #15 in the world at middleweight (one of only 3 Americans). Leo is now top ranked at multiple weight classes. Randy holds #16 in heavyweight and #23 at medium-heavy. Xavier breaks into the top 50 with a rank of #43 in medium-heavy. Multiple top ranked athletes out of middle of nowhere TX. There’s no advanced class. There’s no competition class. Just regular people doing their thing. The guy or girl just trying to get in shape could become the next top 50 athlete in the world in their division.

Congrats to and for earning🄈 and šŸ„‰ at IBJJF Houston International Open in the lightweight Gi division! While they are known for their work in No-Gi having climbed to the top of the world rankings, I’ve been wanting for them to showcase a different story. That the 80/20 approach to grappling isn’t about techniques it’s about people, processes, methodologies, and culture. We’re not a No-Gi school. We’re not a ā€œcompetitionā€ school. We just teach Jiu-Jitsu, our own way. There’s no magic.

Great work today by !! He had a great match against a Top 50 ranked IBJJF No-Gi black belt and it went the distance. He was an exciting match up where Randy lost by two points awarded due to a submission attempt. In the gi, he got 3rd place šŸ„‰ in a bracket stacked with multiple brown and black belts.

De La Riva is one of the most difficult positions to play in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. A common situation when playing De La Riva is that the top player backsteps and exposes a look at their back. In this situation there is a pathway to achieve a sweep or backtake but must be played very carefully. In our opinion the correct answer is Option B. Option A is a common mistake we see in No-Gi: inserting the double crab ride against a _standing_ opponent gives them time to run away and without a belt or pant grip it will be incredibly difficult to keep control and against resisting opponents often leads to losing position entirely. In contrast, underhooking the opponents far leg is a high probability way to make them stumble and knock them down to hands and knees. Anytime we can bring our partner down to hands and knees is your cue as the bottom player to lock hands around your partners hips. If they run away your grip will allow you to follow them and wrestle up to take the back from the top of the turtle or four points position. If they do not run then you can pull them down and load their weight onto single or double crab rides and chase the back from the floor.

held a great Christmas King of the Hill event today. 1 hr straight King of the Hill 3 points per submission and 1 point for every min you stay in. Three active hills to fight between. They gave out some incredible prizes. I’ll tell you this the format was tough. The most rest anyone got was probably 2 mins tops. All the participants had to dig deep and I was really impressed that every single person fought hard until the end. Was a really innovative and fun time. Great work !!
