A wild day out for our ELECT families! Our ELECT program recently brought students and their little ones together for the annual trip to the Erie Zoo 🦁

ELECT provides support to pregnant and parenting students as they work toward their high school diploma or GED. The program offers individualized guidance, resources, and connections to help students balance their education with the responsibilities of parenting.

The day was filled with opportunities to learn and spend quality time together. Students and their children explored the zoo, participated in a hands-on animal encounter with a guinea pig and a ferret, and read a zoo-themed story together. Each family also received their own copy of the book to take home, encouraging parents to continue reading with their children and building early literacy skills at home.

From learning about animals to sharing a story with their little ones, it was a fun-filled day focused on family, learning, and making memories together! 🐾

On Monday, we kicked off the 2026–2027 school year with our IU5 In-Service General Session! It was a wonderful day bringing our staff together to reconnect, learn, and get energized for the year ahead. 🎉

A special thank you to General McLane SD for hosting us and helping make our In-Service possible. We’re grateful for their hospitality and support!

We were honored to welcome Jordyn Zimmerman, a passionate educator and disability advocate, as our keynote speaker. After being diagnosed as autistic at a young age, Jordyn did not gain access to augmentative communication until she was 18. Her personal journey fuels her commitment to leveraging tools, supports, and inclusive practices to create meaningful change in learning spaces and beyond.

Jordyn challenged us to think differently, question the status quo, and recognize what is possible when individuals have access to the communication, tools, and support they need to thrive. Her message was an inspiring reminder of the important role we all play in creating more inclusive and accessible opportunities for the students we serve.

We also had the privilege of presenting this year’s Annie Sullivan Award to Sheryl Decker! Congratulations, Sheryl! Your dedication, compassion, and impact truly represent the spirit of this award, and we are so grateful for all that you do for IU5.
