If your child is bright but still struggling to read, even after tutoring, interventions, or all the things you've already tried, I want you to know something that many families never get the chance to hear.

Sometimes the missing piece isn't more reading instruction. Sometimes it's what's underneath the academics.

Maybe you've watched your child work twice as hard as their classmates, only to end the day frustrated, exhausted, and wondering why reading seems to come so much more easily for everyone else.

If that's your family, I want you to know you're not alone.

Over the past 26 years of working with children, I've learned something that completely changed the way I approach struggling learners.

Reading instruction is essential. I believe deeply in explicit, structured literacy instruction.

But I've also learned that reading instruction can only build on the foundation that's already there.

When the brain and body systems that support attention, eye tracking, coordination, balance, and regulation aren't working together efficiently, learning often feels harder than it should. Children can absolutely make progress, but it often comes with far more effort than necessary.

That's why I created Underneath the Academics for Families.

It's a 24-week NeuroDevelopmental Movement® program that helps strengthen the brain-body foundation underneath learning, so the academic instruction your child is already receiving has the opportunity to stick more easily.

One homeschooling mom who completed the program recently shared something that stopped me in my tracks.

Three years ago, her daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia and was reading at a pre-K level.

Last fall, she began her fifth-grade language arts curriculum.

**At grade level.**

Mary wrote,

"To be at grade level after a severe diagnosis shows the power of NeuroDevelopmental Movement®."

Stories like hers are exactly why I'm so passionate about this work.

Enrollment for the September 2026 cohort opens on August 10, with early enrollment pricing available through August 20.

If you're wondering whether this could be the missing piece for your child, the best place to begin is with a free "Is This the Right Fit?" call.

It's a relaxed 30-minute conversation where we'll talk about your child, your concerns, and whether this program truly makes sense for your family. If it isn't the right fit, I'll tell you that too.

Whether you're simply curious or wondering if this could be the next step for your child, I'd love to hear your story.

Your child is smart. You've done the research. You've hired the tutors. And something still isn't clicking. This program addresses what the tutors couldn't reach — the brain and body foundation that has to be in place before reading can stick.

When months of Orton-Gillingham tutoring still aren’t enough, the program usually isn’t the problem — underlying neurological gaps often are. Read our latest post to learn what those gaps look like and the practical next steps that actually help students make lasting progress. Read more: https://wix.to/qnvqF2K

When a child has had months or even years of Orton-Gillingham tutoring and still isn't reading at grade level, the problem is almost never the program. OG is one of the strongest tools in reading intervention. But it works at the academic layer. If there are gaps in the neurological foundation under...

Remember the thrill of the first sprout? In “It Starts With Two Small Leaves,” Jessie Forston recalls planting bean seeds with her first graders, the daily care, the waiting, and that unforgettable morning when new life appears. A short, sweet reminder that growth often begins with small, patient steps. Read more: https://wix.to/YjJFQKE

Every spring when I was teaching first grade, we planted bean seeds. Each child got a small cup of soil, a seed, and the very important job of checking on it every single day. We lined them up on the windowsill. We watered them. We waited. And then one morning, something would break through. It never g...

Did anyone else grow up celebrating March 4th as “March Forth” day?

When my boys were little, our neighbor had all the kids grab pots and pans and march down the street in a joyful little parade.

It stuck with me.

This year the idea of marching forward feels especially meaningful as I continue healing and return to working with my students. I wrote a short blog post about it today. . https://wix.to/xT2A176

When my boys were little, there was a family of four who lived down the street. The mom was wonderfully quirky in the best possible way, and she introduced our neighborhood to the magic of “March 4th.”Each year on the 4th of March, her family invited all the neighborhood kids to “March Forth.....

The last couple of weeks slowed everything down in a way I didn’t expect. I’m recovering from a serious car accident and learning, very personally, how much healing depends on safety, regulation, and support before strength or forward movement is even possible.

What keeps standing out to me is how familiar this feels.

We often ask children to produce, perform, or try harder when their systems are overwhelmed. But learning, like healing, doesn’t begin with effort. It begins when the brain and body feel safe enough to do their job.

This is the lens I bring to my work with families and educators. We don’t rush progress. We build foundations so progress can actually last.

I’m grateful to be healing, and I’m grateful to be back here sharing this work.

If this perspective resonates, you're in the right place.

The last two weeks have slowed my world down in ways I didn’t expect. In the middle of healing from a serious car accident, I’ve been reminded that progress doesn’t come from pushing harder, but from safety, regulation, and support. This reflection connects what my body is teaching me right now with what I see every day in kids who are struggling to learn. Sharing in case it resonates. Read more:

It’s definitely not glamorous. And boring does not even begin to describe the days. Still, I am making it through with baby steps and the steady support of my family, friends, and community. It has been two weeks since the head on collision that landed me here. We were hit straight on by a drunk dr...

This is the shift that changes everything.

When we understand development, we stop blaming kids for what their nervous systems aren't ready to do yet.

Hi, I'm Jessie! I help teachers and families understand learning through a brain-body, developmental lens. Glad you're here ⭐️

This is where so many families and teachers get stuck.
We look for motivation, behavior plans, or more practice, when the real gap lives underneath the academics.
