The first month after an autism diagnosis can bring a surprising amount of information at once. There may be reports to read, school questions, insurance calls, therapy recommendations, unfamiliar acronyms, and advice coming from several directions.

You do not need to solve everything in 30 days.

This is not a deadline, and there is no single correct order that every family must follow. The purpose of this guide is to give North Carolina families a calm way to organize the first month so that important questions do not get buried under paperwork.

Caregiver training is not a bonus feature.

It is the part that makes everything else hold once the therapist goes home. If it is not in the plan, ask why.

Comfort comes first.

Autism awareness and autism acceptance are often used as though they mean the same thing. They do not.

Awareness means recognizing that autism exists and learning basic information about it. Acceptance goes further. It means treating people with autism as full members of their families, schools, workplaces, and communities. It means respecting different ways of communicating, moving, learning, and participating while providing support where it is needed.

Four foods. Then three. Then the one brand in the one shape, and dinner becomes the hardest half hour of the day.

Picky eating on the spectrum usually has a reason worth finding, and texture is often the answer. Chewing is a skill that has to be built, which is why avoiding certain foods keeps the cycle going. Widening a short menu takes time and the right help. No diet was ever expanded by insisting.
