As we wrap up another year of the Orlando Fire Conference, we wanted to share a short note from the helpers.

One of the best parts of this conference is the mealtimes. Shocking, I know. But for those of us who help, it is when we get to see the guys, interact, and do a small part to give back.

Whether it is the lunches, the instructor dinner, or the specialty dinners, mealtimes let us witness the camaraderie, hear the stories, and truly feel the community that has been built here. One of the most striking things every year is the number of people who take the time to thank us for hosting, for cooking, for handing them a drink or a bottle of water, or for whatever small thing we may be doing in that moment. They pause to say thank you. And that always means more than they probably realize.

At its core, this conference started with one man who had an idea, and five people who helped bring it to life. In time, that five became nearly 150 instructors working together to make this what it is. They sacrifice time with their families. They miss moments with their kids. For some, it is week after week away from home, all to deliver knowledge, to teach those coming up behind them, and to share their passion for the fire service.

Honestly, serving pork and Publix fried chicken is the very least we can do considering how much they give to be here.

The attendees are no different. They come eager to learn, committed to growing, and invested in the idea of continued education. They, too, take the time to say thank you to us. But truly, we owe them just as much. Their buy-in and dedication, year after year, is the reason this conference continues to thrive.

Because of that commitment, our kids have had a place to grow up. A place to see passion in action. A group of people they think of as celebrities, people they are completely enamored with. The instructors have become an extended family, and our kids love and look forward to seeing them every year. It is what makes them schedule time off work just to be here.

Nicole Williams is just one of the “kids” who has been working alongside us for years. Now married and living in Tampa, she still comes back every year to serve pork and pick up chicken, because this conference is part of her life and always has been.

The truth is, thank-yous are not necessary. Without the instructors, the students, Raphael, our master jalapeño margarita maker, this conference simply would not be the same.

So again, we say thank you.

Thank you for teaching.
Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for believing in the idea that, as Bill Gustin said, “never stop being a student.”
