Every child has brilliance

Dr. Brad Johnson named what a lot of early childhood teachers have been living: kindergarten got pushed to look like second grade, and the bill is still coming due.

Play got treated like a luxury. Sitting got treated like readiness. Packets multiplied because they photograph well for a walkthrough. Five-year-olds still build language, regulation, and curiosity through movement, story, and hands-on work. Compress that into premature seatwork and you do not get miniature second graders. You get tired kindergarteners and teachers policing bodies instead of growing minds.

Kindergarten can be rich with literacy and number sense without cloning second grade. The difference is how learning lives in the room: through play and talk, not compliance theater.

A child spends roughly 14,000 - 16,000 hours in school from kindergarten through 12th grade. And that doesn’t even include the countless hours spent doing homework and studying at home. After all that time, what are they leaving with?

Can they think critically about what they hear and read? Manage money? Advocate for themselves, navigate conflict, make decisions, and solve problems without step-by-step instructions? Have they had the chance to discover their strengths and explore what they might want to pursue?

The research gives us reason to ask. Stanford researchers found that high school students struggled to evaluate the credibility of information online. An OECD assessment found that 17% of U.S. 15-year-olds had not reached baseline proficiency in financial literacy. In a 2025 Gallup survey, only half of middle and high school students said school gave them opportunities to do what they do best. And in a separate survey, fewer than three in ten high school students felt very prepared to pursue the paths after graduation that interested them.

No one needs their whole life figured out at 18. But after roughly 15,000 hours, students should have had meaningful opportunities to build these skills, discover what matters to them, and leave feeling capable of learning what comes next.

Parallel play is more social than it looks.

Two toddlers may be side by side, each focused on their own toys, with barely a word between them. But a lot of learning can be happening. They’re watching, imitating, exploring, communicating. And getting more comfortable sharing space with other children.

For early childhood professionals, these everyday moments can offer a window into a child’s social, language, cognitive and motor development.

And an important reminder: stages of play aren’t rigid deadlines. Children may move between different types of play depending on the activity, setting and people around them.
