Learning to Respond from the heart:
This year I have been focused on building community in ways that push me outside of my comfort zone. Not in ways that are harmful but instead in ways that ask more of me. More love, vulnerability, and more openness to lean into conversations that help us build together.

Please lower the bar….
We highly underestimate the work and connections we make in community. Many of the things you are currently doing are mentorship but you fail to give yourself credit for it. Ask yourself what a cultural workspace looks like. How are you dedicating time to these community spaces? You are allowed to give yourself credit for the ways you move spaces towards inclusivity while also remaining focused on the future of that work.

Mistakes, Shame, and Next Steps
I'm already missing Budapest. Too much of my process has centered the mistakes I've made. Sometimes I think I carry them in my favorite puffer vest.

Happy Birthday, Mom ♥️♥️
The hardest thing about losing my mom are all the moments I want to celebrate the little things. Some of my coolest accomplishments, the things I want to brag about came after. You miss so much when someone you love dies. But what I miss the most are the times I just want to tell her about the simplest parts of my day that bring me the most joy. Her birthday always lands on the first day of classes, and I wish I could send her a photo of my outfit like it’s the first grade.

This year I am determined to balance the grief, frustrations, and disappointments with the love, joy, and grace that is always in me. Academia seems determined to minimize and silence Black voices, Black spaces, and Black joy and I refuse to let it. Here’s to another successful academic year.

It’s what we do for academia…
and what I can do for my students…
What makes this job worth it? My students. Jason Arday’s message “hope springs eternal”. If you are feeling unsure, know that you belong here, your work is critical to changing the world, and more than anything, we believe in you. There are so many of us who believe in your work and value your presence.

Dr. Jason Arday was a university professor, advocate for change, and supporter of students. He spoke eloquently of hope and purpose but made research about race, racism, and discrimination in education easy to understand. He stood with pride and excitement when lecturing about his work. His face continuously lit up when talking about how important it was for children, like himself, to believe they could do and be anything. My heart, love, and prayers go to his family, his community, and his students.
