Lodi Saunters

Lodi Saunters Each hike is directly connected to the National Common Core Standards in Education in literacy and mathematics.

Saunters is a statewide program of the Ice Age Trail Alliance that directly combats childhood obesity, learning loss and nature deficit disorder by utilizing the Ice Age Trail as a low cost medium for lifelong exercise and learning. The objectives of Saunters are to take students hiking on various segments of the Ice Age Trail for consecutive days while addressing each of the needs listed above. D

uring the programs, students will practice non-fiction reading, general mathematics, learn about our geological and cultural history as well as develop leadership and collaboration skills while navigating different segments of the Ice Age Trail in teams. The strategy for meeting these goals involves a strong partnership with the Ice Age Trail Alliance and the Lodi School District. Saunters will be part of the school offerings for the district. Registered students will be provided with educational materials and transportation. Thus, the Ice Age Trail Alliance is working with the Lodi School District to secure funding to make this events possible.

Day 5 - Well, our ‘traditional’ Day 5 schedule changed a bit, but not because of Mother Nature! We adjusted the day so we could cheer on our awesome softball team on their way to state! The morning started with handing out the prized possessions- Saunter shirts! We then worked on thank you cards for everyone that helps us Saunter and posters for the softball team. About mid morning we hit street to cheer the team and it was so cool to see our 100+ Saunterers in their shirts cheering! We then planned to Saunter the beautiful segment behind the high school but had to stop half way as a huge limb was hanging precariously over the trail and we did not feel it was safe to continue. So we adjusted and went to the bridge to take some special pictures (those will be posted later). Finally, we had our Friday ceremony to celebrate our amazing Saunterers for an incredible and story filled week! Even with all the changes, we still managed to Saunter 28 miles! It was our biggest group with our daily average of 107 Saunterers who were amazing and so flexible and understanding with the weather related changes to our schedule!

Now - this is not the last post as we have some special pics, videos and posts to share so keep following and SAUNTER ON!

Sorry for the delay - here is Day 4!
We had planned to go to Janesville and then hit Culver’s on the way home, but with weather we stayed close to home. The plan was to Saunter Twin Pines and then refresh with ice cream at The Scoop, but Mother Nature had other plans. After we completed the Saunter we made it back to the high school just as the storm rolled in. Fortunately, Susie’s Sweet Treats saved the day and made a special trip to the school! Although our plans changed several times, it was still a great Saunter! Saunter On!

Day 3 was a shorter Saunter but it will be a bit longer of a post -

Well, every Saunter will have a ‘story’ and yesterday gave us one! We knew the weather would be an issue and shortened our scheduled hike. However, we set a new Saunter record with completing 4.25 miles in under two hours! What makes this more impressive is that we had 107 Saunterers on the challenging and rocky trail! We had to cruise to get swimming in and cruise we did! Once at the swimming hole a great time was enjoyed by all and a well deserved refreshing swim was appreciated !
As we mentioned, we monitored the weather closely and we were in close communication with administrators, Kobussen, our drivers and many weather apps. We moved out earlier than planned and so impressed with the Saunter Crew on how well they helped each other. The bus ride was one that was a bit ‘interesting’ with the rain and the wind but again, we cannot thank our drivers enough as they were rockstars behind the wheel!! Thank You!

Thank you families for your flexibility and support yesterday as that was truly appreciated! Thank You!!

We also need to give a big thanks to Mrs. Rhode and Mrs. Anderson for lifeguarding and keeping the 100+ safe in the water. Without these two superstars, we would not be swimming ! Thank You!!

Finally - a big Thank You to our mentors. We usually give them a shout out on Friday but we are going to give them an extra one now! This might be one of our BEST mentor groups we have had in years and yesterday they really showed it! They were amazing at motivating their groups when the trail got tough (as they did all week), they helped get everyone get organized as we quickly packed up, but it was the bus ride home where we saw them shine again. Many left their seat to go sit next to someone who was nervous about the bus ride. They showed so much care and compassion in calming them down and helping make the bus ride home a little easier.❤️ Absolutely Amazing!

Yesterday showed why Lodi Summer Saunters is a success as it is not just one person or a small group that makes it work, but it is everyone working together, helping each other, supporting each other and everyone coming together not just yesterday, but all week! ❤️

Saunter Families - if you didn’t see the email yet , here is the plan:
Yes, we shall Saunter On tomorrow but not in Janesville. We are staying close to home and will hit some of the beautiful Lodi segments. We know that a stop at the World’s Largest Culver’s was on the schedule for tomorrow, but we will do something just as tasty - ice cream by the Ferry! As we look at the weather, we are shortening our day and will be back at the high school at 2:00 so we can avoid the next forecasted storm.
Thank you everyone for your support and flexibility with today and our adjusted schedule for tomorrow.
Saunter On!
