Watch out! Innovation with inclined planes is popping up throughout the grades at CTL.

As students in every grade learn about simple machines through this year's shared science theme of Energy and Invention, their experiences with the content take all forms: from exploration in the pre-k and kindergarten maker space, to making light work of heavy materials in the outdoor classroom with 1-2, to classroom experiments in 3-4, to calculating the force needed to move plastic eggs (and eventually real ones!) up an inclined plane in the middle school.

Science is more engaging—and the learning is more lasting—when kids of all ages get to be hands-on. Well done, scientists!

Joy, connection, teamwork: it was all in the air during a fabulous Field Day at Chewonki Campground on Friday. One of CTL's favorite traditions is to begin and end the year with our friend Pam Brackett at this beautiful spot that has held many memories for our students over the years.

The emphasis in the fall is on belonging and creating a special shared culture within each group that will carry into the rest of the school year. The pre-k and k groups kicked this off by meeting their class mascots: the beloved stuffies that take turns going home with each child.

Do you know a little one who would love to experience stories and music in a warm, welcoming environment? CTL presents Song and Story on Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:15am. Experience picture books paired with guitar music in community with other local caregivers of kids four and under. Spread the word!

Welcome back, CTL—back to another year of teaching and learning, joy and discovery, connection and friendship. Hearts were full and smiles wide yesterday as new class groupings gathered and we kicked off a fresh school year together.

Congratulations to all the kids and families marking new beginnings this week!

Have you been considering the CTL internship program? Do you know a teacher who could use a PD week full of ideas to implement this school year? Now's the time! Due to a last-minute cancellation, one spot remains in each of our fall intern weeks: 9/28-10/1 for grades 5-8 and 10/26-29 for grades k-4.

Experienced faculty demonstrate research-based workshop teaching and provide materials and ideas visiting teachers can take home to their own classrooms. Come spend four fall days on the coast of Maine with us!

CTL Then and Now: Students have always been teachers here on Cross Point Road. Our name, Center for Teaching and Learning, refers to the idea that here, everyone is engaged throughout the day in both ways. Kids of all ages have the chance to teach the group: whether at the board in math class, in the rocking chair during a booktalk, as part of a science or history presentation to older or younger peers, or in front of the whole community at Morning Meeting.
